(PG) Question about Outlaw Star episode "Forced Departure."
PG
Okay I was just watching it on Toonami, at first Gene's posioned then Mel has this thing where she cured him. Can someone explain how she did this? Nekked none the less (uncut.) Do Bio-androids have some form of super metabolism that can be shared with others?
BTW Did that scene just seem very wrong, a naked Melfina hugging up on Gene?

Well--
--I was thinking she was an empath, but that would be more at feeling another's pain with them, wouldn't it? Maybe she emitted a low-grade radiation from her skin that neutralized the venom. As for naked Malfina hugging Gene, it's no worse than the subtle yaoi I see between him and that Jim boy. They bicker like an old married couple, and in one scene they look embarrassed after Malfina points out that they're drawing a crowd with their little spat (note how close the two are to each other).

Jim is openly gay in the original show. He likes Gene a lot, but Gene is soft on him because he helps him a lot with his jobs.

I don't think Jim's gay dude, I mean look at the way he kinda recoils from Fred's advances. One line in particular from the uncut version. Well pariphrased it went something like...
Fred: I can't wait to see you in a couple of years when you're all grown up.
Jim: In a couple years when I grow up I will be FAR away from here.
Jim humors Fred but Jim is just like straight up no way on the issue. And he named his car a word that is German for "My Wife." If he has any kind of prefrence its for his car
.

I might be confusing Jim with Fred. Now if I meant Fred...
He is gay. I have the subs and translator's claims to prove it.

Fred IS gay, even the Toonami version implys that. Which is why he wasn't very interested in Melfina when she introduced herself.

Ahh...okay, then I meant Fred. He likes Gene, right?
-
Right...exactly he does kinda have crush on Gene.

Fred...he was a good dog....
Obscure Ray Stevens reference. Ask your folks.
Is it my imagination or does Fred sound a little like an effeminate Freakazoid? I also swear I heard an officer on Mobile Suit Gundam who sounded like Wolverine in X-Men: Evolution....
As for Jim and Jean--well, I'm not saying they are that way, but the way they recoiled in the aforementioned scene, I imagine a few in the crowd thought they were witnessing a lovers' tiff. The look on Jean's face was, "Hey! I haven't been in space that long!"

My folks don't know the reference. Ack. And you're only a few years older than me.
Which officer sounds like Wolverine? Bright Noah? I'm so in the dark about the dub. How's the show coming along? You said it was bland at first, and from an objective standpoint, I agree that there are several early episodes that are bland, but anything in the show keeping you hanging on? I am very amused by the reactions on the 'net about the show. Some, of course, can't get past the animation, which I expected. Some think the writing is a bit thick and expository, which is true at times. Some think it's a more realistic space-war scenario than they thought, and are actually digging it. Some are being egged on by guys like me who yap about the psychological devlopment of the characters.
I like it for nostalgic reasons--I can never hate old 70s-80s mecha shows. Dunno why.

Part of it's your imagination. Outlaw Star (along with Cowboy Bebop, Big O, 08th MS Team, and some others I can't remember at the moment) was dubbed by Animaze(sp?), which to my knowledge had nothing to do with Freakazoid.
If you think the officer in MSG sounds like Wolverine in X:ev, you're right on the money. The actor you're thinking of is Scott McNeil. He works with Ocean studios, and has done a tone of VAing.
As for MSG, I'm loving it. Originally I started watching because I wanted to see what it was that spawned a 20 + year old franchise. Now I'm hooked.
For the record MSG's animation was never a problem for me because when I look at animation I compare it against other shows from the period, not modern stuff. From what I can tell MSG's animation looks down right decent for the time.

Aside from the animation, some also grumble about the 70s soundtrack and the odder anime narrative techniques used in the old days. Check out the glinting eyes that represent emotions stirring inside a character. I always loved that cheesy stuff.
"Sure, Garma, everything will be just fine."
*Eyes glint*

Okay...I watched an episode of the show again last night. Just to get my facts straight, Jim's the kid, right? And Fred is...the arms dealer or something? Dang, I haven't seen this show in ages...
