08TH MS TEAM, edits, CN, Midnight, and Gundam

    Like This Thread!
Not having CN myself, I don't get to watch a lot of the shows on there, but I understand that they let more things slide than your typical network. Their midnight run apparently targets an older audience. That being said...

It seems that there are a few superfluous things still cut from the midnight run. No, I'm not talking about nudity or graphic violence, which is understandable, but a few of the stranger things, like references to alcohol, or dead bodies lying FACE DOWN on the ground.

The rationale for the cuts is that CN is a children's network and to preserve that reputation they must still edit shows in late night. I don't understand this. In that case, Kid's WB is for children, therefore they should never air any extreme violence on that network EVER (Angel, Charmed, etc,.) One would assume that Midnight airing should leave everything except some of the more extreme stuff, like sex or nudity or graphic violence (like someone's head blowing up).

That said, there seems to be some inconsistent things in their editing. I understand that Mobile Suit Gundam was able to show some footage of dead civilians, though from a far away shot. It seems that some of the corpses in 08TH MS TEAM, a midnight airing, should be able to be aired intact, even if the corpses are showing some blood.

In my opinion, a dead corpse is no worse than the "dead" Barbara Gordon in that "Over the edge" episode of TNBA a few years back. Speaking of which, did CN ever air that episode?

    8th MS team

The digital Bikini's are in vouge of coarse. I heard that a few swear words where cut out, and that other things like that where there.

Oh well, dub for both of them sounds pretty good. Except for that girl saying Amuro's name ever 10 secs.

Hey, Frau Bow loves her friend. Frau's cute, and so is Sayla...but my Gundam goddess is Lalah Sun.

The floating corpses in 08TH MS Team were edited out. And they weren't even graphic...they were space suits, fer cryin' out loud. And Shiro refers to one of the corpses...and since that was apparently edited out...what corpse, might viewers ask?

On the other hand, Aina gets the privilege of bleeding when shot.

A card playing scene was inexplicably edited out. Gambling?

Swear words..."Piss me off," is swearing? They use that kind of language in Saturday Mornings...geez.

I'd love to get CN, since their edits are super-minor compared to network anime, but sometimes they overdo the censorship thing. On the other hand, on networks, some questionable stuff gets passed, but harmless interaction gets cut. Don't as me how TV works.

Well you can obviously tell what had happened to those people. They had died a pretty horrible death.

BTW How long is 8th MS team, by that I mean how many eps.

I caught both 8th MS team & Outlaw Star last night. If 8th team is as edited as you said I'll consider buying it on DVD - Its peaked my interested.

I noticed Outlaw Star was pretty violent.

Just saw my first CN "Outlaw Star" yesterday. Well, I still don't like dubs, but that wasn't TOO bad. Fred was still gay. . sort of. They kept in most of the gunplay, most of Suzuka's threats, and Melfina showed up in her tube without a bathing suit, though she was still almost completely covered up.

I noticed that they kept in the ending credits, with the lousy song and all, but trimmed the fast, fun, opening sequence, which was one of my favorite parts of the show. Huh?!

    Heh heh....

Admittedly the repetition of names in M.S.G. gets irksome after a while...I was trying to figure out if Frau and Amuro were lovers or siblings...and one of the girl's names is Saliah, which is my niece's name! I'll have to point this out to my sister-in-law....I loved Outlaw Star's closing sequence, with the beautiful girls and the hypnotic Japanese music--but what the hell happened to Gene Starwind? His body is covered in scars cut in a tiger-stripe pattern, which reminds me of the guys around the dorm who would get 'faced and give themselves homemade tattoos with hunting knives...a lot of violence, like Gene just shooting a guy without a word or reason, and of course the naked chick in the tank....

Frau and Amuro are siblings, friends and a married couple.

As for the name repetition...I'd have to pull out some of my Cantonese VCDs of the first few episodes, but it didn't seem as pronounced before. I guess it sounds strange in English. In the original Card Captor Sakura, Madison/Tomoyo squeals "Sakura-chan!!!!" A LOT, and often with an adoring expression on her face.

Well, Amuro and Frau grew up together, so they are siblings in a way, even though they are not related. Frau is also very motherly and "wife-ish", and this is more pronounced later on when she takes on the mantle of taking care of a couple of orphans. On the other hand, Amuro and Frau's relationship grew farther apart as Amuro got more caught up with the war, as well as getting personally involved with Lalah Sun and dealing with Char Aznable.

    Adds:

I must admit, I couldn't get into Outlaw Star most of the time. It had a similar concept to Cowboy Bebop, but Bebop spoiled me with superior animation, character design and characterizations. I guess it's an okay show taken on its own, but...Cowboy Bebop spoiled the show for me.

As for 08TH MS Team, I think that has the most "likeable" lead hero of any Gundam series. Hence, he's a great candidate for romance and is one of the reasons why the romantic angle in the show works better than other Gundam series. In M.S.G., Amuro whines a lot...which has caused many to dislike him because of it. On the other hand, he's a psychologist's dream come true because of the emotional baggage he carries (behind Evangelion's Shinji Ikari and Asuka Langley). In the end, Char Aznable actually came out of the show with the biggest fan following (many of them women). Still, as sympathetic as Char becomes, he has his mental problems, like a latent Oedipus complex.
