So how bad do you think Mobile Suit Gundam will be edited?

Wing arrived pretty much okay, but how do you think this one will do, and do you think it will air uncut?

Well, being a fan of anime from 1979-1990, I am biased towards this show. I hope people who watch it do it with an open mind, and hopefully be able to get around the old, old animation. While the character designs are still very memorable (especially LALAH SUN!!!) a lot of people look for flash in animation these days.

Mobile Suit Gundam is the Star Trek franchise of Japan. This 1979 show is akin to the original Star Trek, except in my opinion, it is generally grimmer, with a World War I flavour and more prominent female characters (though the concept of 'babes' and 'fan service' was still in its infancy here).

It seems Toonami is afraid of showing footage of this show because it's so dated. But its contract with Bandai says that they have to air this first.

I have a feeling the newer, slicker 08th MS Team will go over better with animation fans, but the original Mobile SUit Gundam might be a sleeper among kids.

I think all anime should be shown during the evening hours(midnight and later) should be shown uncut. Like Gundam wing was for a few weeks(or was it months? I have a simi-bad memory)
This is very similar to the suggestion put forward by the Quirmian philosopher Ventre, who said, "Possibly the gods exist, and possibly they do not. So why not believe in them in any case? If it's all true you'll go to a lovely place when you die, and if it isn't then you've lost nothing, right?" When he died he woke up in a circle of gods holding nasty-looking sticks and one of them said, "We're going to show you what we think of Mr Clever Dick in these parts..."

But it will be cut, cut down to the point where it will no longer be the masterpiece it once was. Just like everything else has .......THE WAR IS COMING!

I think they'll treat it right. Wing wasn't hacked too badly in the afternoon and got at least one full uncut run on the midnight run. So IMO all the other Gundam shows will either receive the same or similar treatment to Wing. I'm also guessing that if the ratings are good (I'm hoping they are) they can justify an uncut run at midnight later on.

And 0MS8th will be midnight run only.

On a personal note I am so looking forward to this series. A while back I downloaded the into and after seeing the teasers CN's been running the animation's better then I expected. Not to say that I don't think the quality of animation is important to a show, I just compare it to other shows from the same period. And based off what I've seen of other anime from the late 70's and early 80's MSG's animation looks downright decent.

"Toonami is proud to present the most groundbreaking anime saga of all time... fully restored... Mobile Suit Gundam."

"Suit up for the first time."

Well, we're still waiting for Endless Waltz to be aired here. But I'm sure MSG and O8th MS Team will be treated properly, CN were rewarded with Gundam Wing, so they'll give other Gundam series alot of backing.

I finished 08th MS Team recently, and I think an uncut (or relatively uncut) midnight run is appropriate. I think Platoon fans will enjoy this series--it's a nice change of pace from the space battles of other Gundams. Much of the setting is on Earth in deserts, jungles and villages.

1979 MS Gundam is the anime that popularized "believable" space sci-fi (relatively speaking). Evangelion fans can take note: MS Gundam was the "springboard" for what was to come. Shinji is much like MS Gundam's Amuro...except Amuro is much deadlier overall. And Wing fans can see how much Zech was, uh, "based" on Char Aznable. Take Zechs and add brains and subtlety=you get Char Aznable.
