    What race is Robin?

    Like This Thread!
On One Piece, what race is Robin? If I had to guess I would say she's arab. But, she might be latino.

I swear she looks Egyptian! Put her in Cleopatra's wardrobe and she's a dead ringer.

Does the world of One Piece even have races?

As far as I can tell, the only real races in One Piece are whites and blacks.

Yes it does, but only in the sense that there are "humans", and then there are other humanoid races like giants and fishmen. There are different ethnic groups among the humans however, and some of them in the Japanese version apparently spoke in foreign accents like Spanish.

Robin's ethnic background could be best summed up as "pan-latin", since she has a rather ambigiously vague surname (Nico) that could be South-Western European in origin, and she uses both French and Spanish words when calling out attacks in the Japanese version. Still calling her a Latina would be as wrong as saying she's a cowgirl because of her choice in hats.

Well, I meant races as in just for plain old humans.

Oh, so that's why 4Kids called her Latino in a promo over a year back.

Well Robin's history is known (saying what it is would be spoilers) but the place she was born in didn't have any spefiic racial contexts like pretty much everyone else's villages where they were born. So it's really unknown truthfully. At least from what I know about OP.

well most latino Cowhands are usually from Argentina and Mexico, (called guachos and vaqueros respctively) but to identify her with an earth country, unless their world is earth, I'd say she's probably an Argentinian Guacha.

However is she represents she's just a Mexican American cowgirl.

Gaucho, GAUcho. "Guacho" is actually a derogative term to refer to someone who was abandoned by his parents.

And the Mexican is a "Charro". "Vaquero" is the spanish word used to refer to the American Cowboy.

Which is pretty stupid considering she gets rid of the hat after the Alabasta arc.

As I pointed out earlier, you can't really apply real world ethnic groups to OP. Oda uses real world examples as inspiration but then mixes them together in all sorts of crazy ways.

Sanji is a good example of this, as he is the only male member of the Strawhats with a Japanese name, but he also has blonde hair, speaks French, and likes afros and jazz music.

She does wear a hat in early Skypiea and there's a shot of her Ar/labasta hat in the OP- Bon voyage!

Robin is probably half spanish/half french. Her attack names are a mixture of spanish and french words.

    I don't think Oda ever really went into races other than, like, fantasy races/speices (fishmen, giants, etc.). Though I guess you can have fun guessing what race they could be. ^_^;

    To me, Robin looks egyptian-ish...

Funny because "Sanji" is an East Indian name. At least that partially reduces the hassle of dubbing One Piece in Indian.

I thought Gaucho was some kind of black bean dip. Thanks for the advice. I don't want to get my nose broken by a mexican man in the future for calling him a homeless orphan and have to pay a $500 medical bill when all I wanted was some black bean dip.

    I must concur, actually.

To me Sanji's probably American-Japanese or French-Japanese, but whatever.

So, aren't Egyptians arabs? In my first post I suggested Robin looked arab. I thought arabs included those of Egyptian descent.

Heh, I think so, actually. It's entirely possible that Oda based Robin's character design on Egyptian art/woman/etc. Though whether or not that reveals Robin's actual race remains to be seen.

Since One Piece's world is completely fictional, I'm not even sure the traditional races in our world even exsist (besides the obvious whites/blacks).
