You need to stop assuming that every anime in Japan starts off with 50 episodes or more.
Animes in Japan are no different than cartoons in America. They start off with 13 episodes, and if the ratings are high enough, the company renews it.
Zoids
Big O
Gundam Wing
Outlaw Star
Do any of these shows have more than 50 episodes? I don't know about you, but I liked all of these shows and it disappoints me when they end after 3-9 weeks.

Gundam Wing was 49
...52 if you count Endless Waltz OVA...
I believe that you'll find that most recent series are planed for only 13 or 26 episodes (Cowboy Bebop & Outlaw Star being good examples) and then once the episodes are done the creative team moves on to something else.
Other series (like Matt pointed out) start out with a season of 13 episodes and if ratings warrant then another season will be ordered.
All in all, only the insanely popular series go on to end with 100+ episodes.
100+ episodes anime club
Doraemon
Dragonball/Z/GT
Sailor Moon
Pokemon
Digimon
70+ episodes club
Cardcaptors (CCS Japanese version)
Monster Rancher
Yu-Gi-Oh?
Medabots?
Mon Colle Knights?
Gundam Wing was short ? No, no, no. Blue Submarine No. 6 is short. Gundam Wing is 49 episodes LONG .
Yu-Yu Hakusho has 122 episodes..
And Lupin the 3rd has 200 episodes, I think.
Rurouni Kenshin has 100+ episodes
Inuyasha is pushing 200, I think.
Inuyasha at 200 some? I though it was just pushing around a hundred at most right now.
As foe why are they so "short"? Well, they told the story they wanted to tell, so thier donr for now. Sometimes they come back later and either animate more episodes and/or a movie, but still, they story they wanted to tell was done with, so they ended it. Big O being the obvious exception to the rule here, as it sorat didn't end.![]()

Mr. Obsession is correct. Most Japanese anime titles center around 13 or 26 episodes. If the show is successful, then they'll do another season with the same episode count. And so forth.

I thought Gundam Wing told a story and went out with a bang (Endless Waltz), but I feel that Big O (especially Big O), Zoids and Outlaw Star had so much more potential.
Oh well.

Outlaw Star told the story it was supposed to tell. I mean, they practically touched a god. What do you do to top that?
Big O was supposed to last longer, but was cancelled in Japan. I wish it hadn't been.
