Toonami Fantasy Schedules - 2006 through 3/22/07

Well for the record... they did cut an episode of Lupin for Nazi references... So there are some things that are truely taboo. Lupin is on Adult Swim because adult viewers like it. Kids don't seem to care for it. Lupin was never a big hit with 12-17 like Inuyasha, FMA and Case Closed. It managed to do well enough with 18-34 to stay on but not enough to get more episodes. Where as IY and FMA's 18-34 ratings held them up well and CC's weren't enough despite it's good overall ratings because AS just wanted 18-34 not 12-17. But when IY manages to get the top 30 for cable its with 12-17.

It may also be the factor of... no one wants to edit a classic. But the main reason Lupin was never pitched to Toonami while a show like Trigun was... it well... doesn't have much appeal for kids hear and that's really all there is to it.

Miguzi is rarely a premiere block. You can argue Saturday mornings but not Miguzi. Miguzi is meant for stripping reruns of popular shows and has very few premieres overall. Similar to how Toonami was when SVES got most of the action premieres and all of the aciton original premieres. Toonami is the new SVES. It gets the major franchise premieres on CN with Miguzi just getting LYOKO and GX for premieres at this point. Though that wasn't always the case and it may not stay the case. Honestly I think since it's on Miguzi they might as well air new episodes on One Piece on Miguzi and let something better air on Toonami. But apparently they need another show before they'll even consider that an option because right now 1/4 of Toonami is filler.

You know actually... if you look at CN right now you can see exactly why there should be a seperate action channel.

What action shows are on weekdays?

Transformers/B Daman and Teen Titans in the 6AM spot

One Piece twice a day (Miguzi and prime time)

GX twice a day (both in Miguzi)

Code LYOKO in Miguzi

DBZ in prime time

And the occasional Ben 10 and Naruto after Fridays

Sundays have even less when there isn't a Ben 10 marathon... Pretty much just TMNT and 9:30 Ben 10.

Leaving Saturday as the only day that has a significant amount of action programing. With TMNT at 6AM, some action in the Saturday block and Toonami in prime time.

Just giving Zatch Bell and Naruto weekdays at this point along with what they already have would suffice for me but it doesn't seem CN is willing to give over more than an hour to acquisitions in prime time and since Ben 10 doesn't have enough episodes yet and Teen Titans is all but dead to CN along with the other action originals that came before it there isn't an original action show to take a prominice in prime time. Though JLU would be perfect for that at this point I don't believe they will ever air it in prime time. Probably The Batman will air in prime time sometime this year if it comes back and the ratings don't suck.

So with only that much action total on CN I think an all action network is perfectly reasonable. CN has a ton of action shows it could be airing but wont make space for and that's the main reason such a channel has a lot of potential.

This appears to be a double edged sword. Toonami needs new life or fresh air. The current incarnation while promising at first has become nothing more than a generic action block in presentation, eschewing the aspects that made us like it in the first place so a channel which has keeps the good ol days alive would be pretty nifty.

On the other hand, it'll probably be available in very few homes.

Bleach and Black Cat in Fall possibly another expansion to make Toonami 7-1AM or even 7-2AM.

Legion of Super Heroes or another DC show in November along with Dark Crystal's prequel mini-series (maybe, could be pushed back, might be more than a mini-series).

On Saturday December 30th SGT Frog takes 7PM with an introductory marathon of 4 episodes (I've always liked this plan so I'm stick'n with it even if it's far-fetched) and in turn Hasbro finally looses 7PM on Toonami.

Not scheduled because I don't know when they come out: Teen Titans and Superman DTVs

That looks like an insane lineup, andd Toonami really does have all the pieces in pace to make this a reality.

Uh hate to say it guys but you're Miyaki movie schedules are pretty off. According to William C Maune, Cybertron does get the 7PM slot, but Bobobo is getting the 10:30 showing (as most of the movies are stretching into the three hour terroritory, and the only that dosen't is going to have Zatch Bell instead of Naruto or JLU). Which means that IGPX probably won't be having it's second season till like at least June or something, and some other things you guys have will probably be pushed back as well. (Note: I'm not even going to really try guessing at the schedule till the upfront tommorow).

It's more of an assumption than anything else, taking into account that Adult Swim is expanding on weekdays and is getting bad ratings on Saturdays. By expanding to 10:00 P.M. on weekdays, they can afford to make Saturdays smaller and still remain within the 42 hours/week requirement to remain their own channel.

Final predictions? Well . . .

- About 45% of you will wonder WHY Toonami acquired the big acquisition

- Some of you will be happy, but most of you will be "happyish"

- One show will be announced at the upfront, but won't actually premiere until March 2007.

- Another show that everybody is expecting to be announced won't be. At least, not yet.

- One planned show will be universally loathed by a lot of folks based on the concept alone.

- Expansion? Toonami? Well, something's going to give, as the original announced hours for the Saturday night Toonami may become a reality this May.

- Something French. France is the new Japan, but I have a feeling that Canada may become the new Japan in another year or so.

- 2007 is going to be a big year for Toonami. That will be said at some point at THIS year's upfronts.

Anyhow, that summary alone makes me want to get Toonami back (even if I'm forced to spend three times more for it than I do now).

There's always something most of us hate by concept alone - DICE, Wulin Warriors, etc.

There's always something that's a major surprise out of nowhere - Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo, Kenshin, Cyborg 009, etc. Anyone's guess what that could be this year. Since some of us expect Prince of Tennisso it's not "unexpected" you gotta get more obscure and unlikely than that and I can't say I'm have any idea what that could be.

There's always something that we wonder why they even bothered to get despite the premises making it very suitable for Toonami (dubs... not so much) - Rave Master, The Batman, One Piece, etc. This year it could be Sigma Six or another Hasbro show. Or I hate to say it... but something else from 4kids (that wouldn't be Shaman King or Turtles... though certainly not Pretty Cure). I'd also say MAR is possible in this category if it doesn't go to Miguzi but that's IF CN picks it up.

A french show? I think those will stick to Miguzi honestly, baring Fantastic Four going Toonami as it's animated by Moon Scope. But I'm still thinking that'll be CN Saturday or CW Kids first and then maybe Toonami.

By "original plan" do you mean 7-12AM or 7-2AM? Since I think you mean 7-12AM but the first schedule of the new Toonami was 7-2AM (and boy was that a weird schedule).

And there's usually a mix of what we'd call good and bad but at least one really great thing coming that has pretty much everyone stoked after it's been annouced.

And that's what makes these pick-ups as unpredictable as they are.

If Toonami doesn't get Bleach this year... I'll live. But if they don't I hope they at least get Black Cat since FUNimation of all companies has it and it's about the only youth property CN would bother to pick up from them.

Honestly while I can't say not getting everything on "my list" wouldn't dissapoint me what I really want out of Toonami this year is more air time for the block. Best of all would be some kind of weekday expansion but I'm not holding my breathe on that one.

And Jeff is right about one thing... 2007 will undoutably be a big year as it's the 10th anniversary. Sounds like a good time to bring in a remake of one of Toonami's first shows doesn't it? (of course I mean T-Cats).

So lets sit back and watch the fire works but I'll edit my schedule above to reflect that Bo-Bobo and Cybertron (besides 1 episode of Zatch Bell) are all that airs durring Miyazaki Month.

Last time I checked, Transformers Cybertron was starting at episode 27 on March 11th making all the predictions where it starts again at episode 14 invalid.
