Zatch Bell!: "The Third Spell" Talkback (spoilers)

    Like This Thread!

The battle for Mamodo king has begun...as a new spell and an arrogant new Mamodo emerge! This is the official talkback for the ninth episode of the exciting/strange/juvinille shonen anime "Zatch Bell!" (also known in some circles as "Konjiki no Gash Bell!") Remember to discuss the episode here and to keep all spoilers of future events hidden in spoiler boxes. While we do understand how ShoPro handles the dialouge of the show (keeping it similar to the original), they're editing tactics are still a tad....well, strange. (I doubt its gonna be too bad this week, but we've seen what this show can do already so be prepared) The show is a lot more than it seems to what a kids show should be, and sadly we may not see as much as we want to. But even though the "exclamation points" of the first couple episodes aren't as prevalent, they could still emerge at any time so be prepared!

Last Time: Well I think Sampo did it best in his post for the pics for most of the episode, so I'm gonna let him do it:
    Quote Originally Posted by Sampo

Zatch BEGS Kiyo to take him to school! Kiyo quickly reminds him of other best friend, the Volcan 300! So Zatch heads out to the park and runs into Kolulu. He quickly finds out that his new best friend pales in comparison to the hand made Tina doll. Zatch tearfully watches Kolulu and Lori run off happily together as he cluches his one armed Volcan 300.

Zatch confronts Kiyo and yells at him. He demands that Kiyo make him a newer friend who is better than Tina! Kiyo, confused at the little guy's ranting, notices that something strange happened on the News. A young girl with inhuman powers caused a three car pile up. They both head out to see what is happening while Lori ponders on the problem that she found out the day before. Kolulu has another personality that appears when she uses that book and decides not to ever read the book again. Things seem to go well untill Kolulu runs into the street to retrieve a ball that was thrown too high...
We all know the consequences of what happened next...Zatch and Kolulu were forced into a battle they couldn't avoid all because Lori wanted to protect her "sister". As the battle continued, Kolulu's second spell was revealed and was used due to Kolulu's coersion and Lori's protective nature. But deep down inside, the female duo knew that this whole path was wrong...both human and Mamodo (even Kolulu in her "other form") were crying, knowing they didn't want to fight but were forced into this situation. Kiyo kept wanting to go on, but Zatch immediately understood what was going on and refused to attack her anymore even at the risk of his own life. It took, though the intervention of Lori herself to stop "berserk Kolulu" and return her to her normal, stable, cute self. But the damage was already done: she saw everything she did, both to her surroundings and even to her bookkeeper...and couldn't take it anymore. Taking the book from Lori, the female Mamodo tells Zatch to destroy it, removing her from the tournament and preventing her from becoming this "other self" again. As long as she remained in the human world, the temptation of the book will always remain..and this was the only way to save both herself and her bookkeeper. Zatch doesn't want to do it, but with a little trick Kiyo plays on him, what was needed to be done was done. Lori didn't want to see Kolulu go away, but the Mamodo comforted her that the two will always be family no matter where they are. Then, turning to Zatch, she says the words that end up changing his own perspective for the rest of the series:

"If the Mamodo world was ruled by a benevolent king, then we could bring an end to this horrible fighting..." (OK, not word for word, but you get the point)

And with those words, the remains of Kolulu's book burned away and she returned to the Mamodo world...leaving behind a big sister and a friend with a new determination....

Hmm. Well, since we are getting further and further away from that episode of Kiyo heading to the hospital. Here is the poll I was going to put up. This may seem weird, but it keeps bugging me So to get it out of my system, here we go:

If you were like Kiyo Image.. You would...

    5. Head on to the hospital. Good food, clean sheets, doodled fruits, and... Helllooooo Nuurrssee!
    4. Form an elite attack squad, build a compound in the mountains, and spark the flames of revolution once again! Shishio style!
    3. Star as MUUUMMMMRAAAAAAA Image.
    2. End up on Case Closed as another freaky guy that likes to dice up people!
    1. Take another crack at a pokemon that covered in bandages.

Sorry about that. I don't want to show any disrespect to StrangerAtaru, I think he is doing a great job. I just had to get that out of my system.

    Later.

What happened to the guy who used wind powers in the first episode, I don't remember exactly but I don't think he died.

Both Hyde and tonight's Mamodo, Fein, use wind powers. But while I don't know exactly how Hyde manipulates his wind abilities (since Toei created him for the anime), I do know that Fein uses his powers in at least one unique way you'll see tonight. But trust me on this one: after the sadness of the whole Kolulu story last week, its sort of nice that she's followed up by a Mamodo that is such a big jerk that he deserves to get his book burned...if Kiyo and Zatch find a way to do it! (trust me: when you see what he does and hear why he wants to become king, you will agree that he is just itching for some Zakeru shocks) Which brings tonight's new spell into focus: while not the most practical spell in some circumstances, it is a very interesting one that, when used in some situations, can give a great advantage to this Mamodo pair. It may take a while for them to unleash it, but the battle turns really interesting once it finally is. (Heh, this turned into a pre-game without me knowing...but hey, at least the main info is now out there)

    A couple more things:
-Sampo, if you want to create a thread for ZB when the day comes and I haven't done it, be my guest. (heck, anyone can do it once its 12:01 on a Saturday...I've just gotten so used to it)

-I was in a Suncoast this afternoon and got a look at a Viz preview book, which includes a translation of some of the first ZB manga chapter. For some reason, as they have been with other stuff, Viz decided to stay with the dub names for all their characters. (Gash = Zatch, Zakeru = Zaker, Kyomaro = Kiyo, etc.) But since they didn't start from the beginning of the chapter (which has the infamous scene with Zatch naked while flying through Kiyo's window), I don't know if and what will be edited compared to the dub depiction. Just giving the heads up for it... (even though Vol. 1 won't be out until Sept., which by then we'll be through at least 7 volumes of manga in the anime)

This mamodo is almost as creepy looking as Naomi.

Oh man... that was a gut buster (for me). Kiyo trying to say the 3rd spell, and the dog that came from nowhere and pee'd on the rock.

EDIT: That Mamodo is creepy. I'd probably scream myself senseless if I wake up and see it staring me in the face. *shudder*

    A question of strategy:

Why bother aiming at the Mamodo? Aim at the book!

A decent episode. The new spell looks pretty cool, though something tells me it's not going to be used very much.

How much longer until we meet all the other Mamodos featured in the original intro?

Speaking of which, did they skip the US intro?

The third spell wasn't as spectacular, but the scene of Kiyo trying to activate it was great. "Maybe I have to sing it! GIIIIKKEEEEERRRDOOOOORRRR!!! GIIIIKEEEEERRRDOOOOOOOR!!!!!!"

Still, just a magnetism spell? Eh...

    8/10.

    Same here! XD
Tho I couldn't tell if it was a dog or not, since my screen is so small. Looked more like a coyote, and makes sense since they're in the mountains.

For some reason, the vibe of this episode seemed rather odd to me. Not a bad "odd", just different.

Anyways, I'd just like to make a comment that I think Fein's (I heard it pronounced as "Bane") voice was a perfect match. It fit perfectly with his creepy clown/doll appearence...kinda Chucky-ish.
Ugh...If I have nightmares tonight, I know who to blame.

I really like the magnet-spell. All Kiyo needs to do now is fight near something metal and he'll win just about every battle!

    5/5

    Next week's episode looks interesting...

(Quick question: Who'd rather have 2 eps of Zatch Bell airing each Saturday night, rather than 2 One Piece ones? I would! ><)

The magnetism spell is useless unless they are near metal. Also, Fein is very annoying and ugly, but I rather stare at him then listen to Kiyo sing:anime: .

    Vive le revolution!

This episode is the funniest we've ever seen Kiyo. That pose he was in after the spell didn't work, and him singing. Priceless. I guess it makes sense since it's the most serious we've seen Zatch.

I think I'm more impressed with the new spell than anyone else (even if I forgot what it's called). We've seen how powerful ra-shield is, and before this episode it was 2 for 2, but it can fail unless it's focused. The third spell didn't seem to need to be aimed (it sought its enemy out), and it renders the guy helpless (unless he's really strong, I guess). But this is something that could rival Brago's gravity thing.

Pretty good. Between the third spell failure to the dog peeing to the "what ifs" to the joker mamodo, this was a pretty amusing episode.

No "!" edits once again! Although it wasn't as good as last week, that would be hard to do. For a more average episode, something just seemed to be missing without the humor elements most episodes have sprinkled throughout. They did do a good job of cementing Zatch's determination to be King, but that was about it. Not a bad episode, just average though.
