Why is DBZ and exception when it comes to dubbing??????

    Like This Thread!
i dont really understand why the dub of DBZ is so bad. they change the music, they make corney dialogue (well, im going alot by what others say, because ive only seen a handful of subtitled dbz), why?? when you look at shows like gundam wing, outlaw star, cowboy bebop, o8th ms, big o, ms gundam, tenchi, heck, even dragonball, they seem to be a much more faithful translation w/ not much changed in terms of music and dialogue, just the obvious edits for tv. so why the heck is dbz different in the way its dubbed?

anyone know, because i really love dbz, but whenever i see a subtitled ep, i notice how different the music is, and basically the overall feel of the show. its alot more intense, and the dialogue doesnt seem as cheesy either. what is the reason for this when there are so many other animes dubbed much more faithfully??

I believe Saban is to blame. They helped bring DBZ to America, because they were looking for another Power Rangers. So we end up with a 'dub' which is actually Americanised.
From what I've heard, it took ages to convince the owners of Gundam to let it be dubbed. They're very protective of it and insisted on an accurate translation. That's what we got, lines are only slightly changed
DragonBall looks to be the result of all the complaints made about the DBZ dub (censorship, music, etc)

Actually, DBZ isn't an exception... many anime dubs have been notoriously crap for years. And bad ones still get made... ever try to sit through the Fox Kids version of Escaflowne? Ack.

The real exception seems to be in Cartoon Network's lineup... for the most part, they've gotten some really good dubs.

Sailor Moon's dub is pretty bad. I have the season 3 DVDs, and it's dual language. Turn on the subtitles while watching the dub and you'll see it's atrociously scripted in the dub. The voices suck, too.

Of course, this is a moot point since you aren't a Sailor Moon fan, but the point is that DBZ is not the only exception.

DBZ isn't the only bad dub, Sailor Moon and Vision of Escaflowne have awful dubs. I only fear for FUNI's next dub which is Yu Yu Hakusho, one of my favorites. Even though they are doing a half-way decent job with Dragonball.

Mainly Saban when they got it, is to blame. They were the main company responsible for the awful dub and lack of the japanese version's music. For the most part FUNI seem's to be TRYING now to make it better, which is more then we got two years ago.

I'm not sure what channel, but it will most likely be Cartoon Network's Toonami.

It does seem like they're doing a better job with the Majin Buu saga also.

Yes, from what I've seen, this is a HUGE improvment over Season 3 and 4. The best thing they did last season with Cell was his voice actor. The worst was Gohan turning SSJ2 for the first time, but without Sprit vs. Sprit playing, it wasn't going to be as good anyway.

I just hope they learn from this and dub Yu Yu Hakusho half way decent.
