For those of you who haven't heard, it's been announced that 150 characters will appear in the first 18 episodes of the new DC animated series "Young Justice." The first two episodes, "Independence Day," air tonight at 7:00 PM Eastern Time. Throughout the course of the series, especially the first eighteen episodes, I will be keeping a tally of the characters that appear in the show. Although the rest of the season doesn't premiere until January, there's no reason not to start with "Independence Day."

At the moment there are about 32-34 confirmed characters. I'll put up a more comprehensive list tomorrow at 8:15, after the end of the premiere.

    This...is gonna be fun!

Good idea, I'm looking forward to seeing who they'll bring out to fill out that number!

Any speculation as to the rankings of the JLA (presumably the order they've joined)? Based on who we've seen and who they've named, here's what I've got:

    01 Superman
    02 Batman
    03 Wonder Woman
    04 Flash
    05 Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)
    06 Aquaman
    07 Martian Manhunter
    08 Green Arrow
    09 Black Canary
    10 Hawkman
    11 Hawkgirl
    12 Captain Marvel
    13 Zatara
    14 Captain Atom
    15 Green Lantern (John Stewart)
    16 Red Tornado

I bolded the ones they confirmed. I'm thinking Hal probably has the 05 Green Lantern status, so I stuck John in at the end, assuming he has a different number than Hal. Also, we don't see the Atom in this episode, but since Red Tornado is acknowledged as 16, I ordered the 16 that appeared in this episode. I feel if Atom does exist and is on the League, he'd be somewhere around 10.

Has it been confirmed that Atom is in the League? We do know that there is 16 members, and if Atom was in the League the number would be 17.

And Mad Hatter perhaps you could number your list?

Yeah, I agree with most of that. Honestly, I think Zatara might have a higher number than 13 (which is actually very fitting, come to think of it), and GL (JS) may have a larger number, but otherwise, I think that line-up's spot on.

And yeah, I'll number the list. Give me a second.

    EDIT: Done and numbered.

That's Captain Atom. We're talking about The Atom.

Weren't you initially talking about Captain Atom? There was no "the" involved, just "Atom". Kinda confusing.

No we were always talking about 'The' Atom. If you look at 90'sCartoonMan's post he puts Captain Atom in the list of confirmed leaguers and then goes on to mention Atom.

And yeah the similar names can get confusing, there's already I think 3 or 4 Atoms and then there's also Atom Smasher.

Even though they say he may not show up in the show I still think that the Joker should show up and bring Duela Dent too.

I was sort of playing off the idea that you have your Big 7 (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman) and then your secondary 7 (Green Arrow, Black Canary, Hawkman, The Atom, Elongated Man, Red Tornado, Zatanna) that was popular in the Satellite Era. That doesn't take Hawkgirl into account (or the Captains for that matter), but Zatara seems to have taken his daughter's place in the line-up.

Oooh, I forgot Ralph! Even though there's no confirmation of Elongated Man or The Atom, I'd still expect them to be high ranked if it's based on the order they joined. Then again, if they're reserve members, maybe they get assigned numbers past 16.

I just based my guesses around the order in which they joined in the comics. I gave Zatara the number Zatanna would've had, even though he is a hero who has been around for a while. Technically, John was never a full-time member of the League in the comics until after the 2001 cartoon, so I stuck him in at the end.

Right now we know that there is only 16 members because that's what the producers said at SDCC and we've seen the 16 members, so currently Elongated Man & Atom aren't Leaguers. But that doesn't mean they won't eventually join up down the road. Therefore they won't have a high rank when they join (if 1 is the highest).

All right, guys and gals. I've plucked this article from the depths of thread obscurity to continue the countdown. Here we go. We had 31 at last count, which means in 24 episodes we've got 149 characters to go. That's 6.2 new characters per episode by the way. Tonight is the airing of "Welcome to Happy Harbor," and although we all know that Brick and Mr. Twister will be in it, I'm not counting them until the time has come. It'll be up at about 10:45 Eastern Standard Time, after I've seen it for the second time and am able to comment on it better. See you then, everyone!

Will you also be including the comic tie-in, or is this just for the TV series?

Hmm. I'm not sure. I don't I'll have much access to the comic book, but I guess I could. BUT, if I did, I'd keep it as a separate countdown. The problem with using the comic book is that I don't have a number to count down from. But I could always just keep a general character count, just to be safe. I'll try to include the comic book count tonight with the regular character count.

I guess you could do 3 countdowns. One for the show and comic-book and the 3rd which combines the two.
