Onslaught is here! The fury of Magneto plus the psionic might of Charles Xavier equals very bad news for the Marvel Universe! Now, discover how this mental monster came to be — and the full extent of the havoc he wreaked on the X-Men, the Avengers and pretty much everybody else! As the truth slowly dawns about the nature of the evil they face, how much are Marvel’s greatest heroes prepared to sacrifice to save the world?

I've heard nothing but bad things about this event, it especially can't be that good if it didn't get a Secret Wars tie in, what could possibly be worth reading?

It's a crossover that was planned on the fly and if you read all of the lead-in up to the Onslaught event it doesn't actually really make sense. Even the event itself gets out of control and is pure 1990s schlock through and through. I read somewhere that they didn't even know Onslaught was going to be Xavier until a month or two before the actual reveal. That said it is weirdly enjoyable in a trainwreck-kind of way and remains a favorite storyline for a lot of X-Men fans who grew up in this era. It's no where near good as Age of Apocalypse, Fatal Attractions or even X-Cutioner's Song, but there is a bit of a weird 'can't look away' draw to Onslaught. The fact that they recently brought Onslaught back in the comics is likely the reason for his new collection.

From what I understand at the this happened nearly all of Marvel's non X-Men books were unreadable at the time, even then I can't imagine the word good when Scott Lobdell was involved.
