I've been reading a bunch of Garfield Minus Garfield lately and I decided to try modifying one of them myself, as to make it a bit weirder.

    Here's the original:

And here's my slightly modded/creepier version:

Lyman was in the first Odie strip, which was included.

Here's a Garfield strip I kind of find baffling.

Is the kid with the striped "bear".... supposed to be who I think it is? (In the Garfield Treasury that contains this strip, the the stuffed animal is colored orange).

So it would seem as though, even though Bill Watterson hated Jim Davis and Garfield with every fiber of his being, the reverse wasn't true.

I'm still not sure about what the beef with Garfield is. I seem to remember hearing that Garfield started to be drawn and/or written by other artists, and maybe still with Jim Davis' name on them? Is that true? So many people "hate" him, but I don't know why exactly. Is it more to do with commercialism?

Is Watterson's opinion on Garfield true tho? I remember him saying that he was neutral over it, although he was more negative with "US Acres".

Was "U.S. Acres" ever a comic, or was it always just a cartoon?

No, hadn't seen it. I haven't really looked around that site too much yet, but I will. :)

He's much clearer in his foreword to the first Foxtrot book:

Read between the lines and it's pretty obvious who Watterson is referring to.

He must utterly despise someone like Gene Simmons, then. ;)

But really (and I know this is getting into off-topic territory), it's a shame that guys like Watterson and Larson are basically hermits now. The ideas don't stop coming once you retire, so hopefully we will have new material someday.

I have to wonder what Larson thinks of the complete Far Side collection. In a sense, I was a bit disappointed in it. Why oh why did they add a bunch of stupid christmas lights to so many panels? Why were a few rewritten? Were those decisions made by Larson, and if so, what for? :p

I haven't seen the complete Calvin & Hobbes yet. Does it also feature questionable decisions?

Well, Larson wrote a picture book "There's Hair in my Dirt" after retiring.

There was also a second Far Side animated special produced, although it only aired once, in UK on 1997.

Yeah, but look how long ago those were. I still believe the creative juices must be flowing and I just hope there will be a new Far Side compilation before I die. Haha.

"Tales From the Far Side" was awesome. I bought the tape, which contains parts I & II, from Amazon.co.uk. They made some big changes to the first part, though, so I'm so glad I still have the original from the night it aired on CBS back in 1994. :)

I'm guessing there must have been a Christmas-themed "Far Side" collection at some point, where they redrew a number of strips to be holiday-related (i.e. turning the two Egyptian camel drivers in "Yep, you've got something in your eye, all right - could be sand" into the three wise men) and they just pulled those strips out of stock for the book without realizing that they weren't the original versions.

Interesting... I seem to recall some that seemingly had absolutely nothing christmas about them other than the lights, too. Just plain weird, I think.

My favorite Far Side collection will always be the 'Prehistory' book anyway. ;)

Here's another good site that translates Garfield into Engrish*: http://garfieldlostintranslation.blogspot.com/

*Engrish (engrish.com) is made when you translate English into Japanese, then take those characters and translate them back into English. The results are very...interesting.

And here is that paragraph in Engrish: "When translating, Engrish (engrish.com) in Japanese it is made in English, and takes translates again those qualities, and in English. As for result very…It is interesting."

That article on U.S. Acres was good. Do the book collections include special material at the beginning and end pages like the Garfield books do?

I enjoyed those U.S. Acres articles too. I loved some of those gags with the signs and the trough! :D
