Currently reading The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien. It's basically a collection of tales of the Elven history and mythology long before the LOTRs.

Divided into several parts, the first 2 tell of the creation of the Ainur, powerful angelic beings and the world by Eru Illuvatur. The song created by Eru is sung by the Ainur, but one particularly rebellious and selfish one named Melkor creates discord and thus evil.

The 2nd part details the Valar, the most powerful of the Ainur that entered into the physical universe that included Middle-Earth. The Valar with their servants Maiar (think a lower order angel) govern and help shape the universe. Melkor corrupts many Maiar and keeps on trashing the world. The Valar fight back.

Currently working on the middle and largest section, the Quenya Silmarillion. It tells of how Darwves, Orcs, Elves. , Humans and the world came to being and their relationship to the Valar and Melkor. But the primary focus is on the Elves, how they began and their history.

It takes a bit, but now getting to the meat of the story - the revolt of the great Feanor from the Valar and his self-centered quest to recapture the titular Silmarils, jewels that hold the great light of two primordial trees. It's a rough start since This being a history of a mythology it's not the organizedtradition Book, and more of a collection of myths.

Taking a small break from The Silmarillion. Plenty of stuff occurring, including the beautiful story of Beren and Luthien (the tale of a mortal man his his love an Immortal Elf princess), the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, and perhaps the most sad of all the tale of Hurin's children.

Hurin's children's story I had to take a break from. It's a dark, sad story that I was surprised that Tolkein wrote it. And its a good tale, even if its told in the form of a chronicle.
