TV GUIDE names THE 50 GREATEST CARTOON CHARACTERS OF ALL TIME!

In its August 3 issue (on newsstands Monday, July 29), TV Guide magazine continues the 50th anniversary celebration of the TV Guide brand by naming the 50 greatest cartoon characters of all time.
Bugs Bunny tops the list compiled by TV Guide editors, followed by Homer Simpson and the duo of Rocky and Bullwinkle. MTV's Beavis and Butt-Head share honors at number four, with The Grinch rounding out the top five.
    See the complete list below.

The special issue features four special animated collector's covers, each featuring an exclusive combination of characters not usually associated with each other.
One cover has Angelica Pickles of Rugrats pulling a football away as Charlie Brown tries to kick it; one has Bullwinkle pulling the head of Homer Simpson out of a hat as Rocky looks on; one has Popeye pulling up an anchor from the side of the boat to find SpongeBob SquarePants on the end of it; a fourth cover features Daffy Duck and Porky Pig in a spaceship as the Powerpuff Girls fly by.
A complete set of the four 50 greatest cartoon characters collector's covers will be available for purchase online at the TV Guide Store beginning Monday, July 29.
TV Guide Online will support the 50 greatest cartoon characters announcement by giving fans the chance to see what has been on Saturday morning television since TV Guide first began 50 years ago.
Users can log on to tvguide.com to find Saturday morning TV grids from the 1950's to the present. Also available are descriptions of classic cartoon shows.
The TV Guide Channel will also celebrate the announcement of the 50 greatest cartoon characters of all time with "Hollywood Insider" segments featuring celebrities talking about their favorite cartoon characters.

What an interesting list. I can't argue with #1, of course. ;)

Nice to see Mighty Mouse, Heckle & Jeckle, and Woody Woodpecker on the list.

    I can't argue with #1 either Jon. ;)

I'm glad that Woody, Heckle & Jeckle, Mr. Magoo, and Mighty Mouse made the list too. Gee that's interesting, a TV Guide "50 Best" list that I actually agree with more than HALF of the entries! Well, 31 to be exact....;)

To the guys on this board:

Do me a favor - anytime you lift an article from my website, please acknowledge Cartoon Research.

Most of you do this. I thank you.

I agree with 95% of this list. Is TOP CAT really greater than Mickey Mouse, Ren & Stimpy, Yogi Bear and Tom & Jerry?

    ARTHUR?

    BILL from Schoolhouse Rock?

There is a lot to debate here!

I mentioned this on WBC, but I must say that I'm pleased the all four of the Rocky and Bullwinkle main characters made it on the list. Shout out to Jay Ward, god bless his soul.

Anyways, I question the validity of this list. When they say "TV Guide" rates them, who exactly is TV Guide? Adults? Equal sex ratio? Any kids vote? I just find their polling a little bit questionable. Take a look at #4. Bevis and Butthead? Call me sexist, but this seems like one male made this list, and just threw in some mercy votes. The top three are a good call...but from there on it seems debatable. It seems cynical of me, but it looks like a list some man in his mid-30s with kids cooked up over lunch. Don't get me wrong, I do like TV Guide's attitude towards animation in general because they actually place animated programs on an even scale with some of those popular primetime dramas, and give critical veiwers....although they do have a tendency to lable it "children's programming".

Anyways, I'm always weary of Top ___ lists. I know Toon Zone has our own Top 10, but it seems the lists can change yearly, considering almost half of the top 20 are contemporary cartoons.

Also, never steal from Jerry Beck. He'll hunt you down and give you a wedgie! LOL. Go to his site at www.cartoonresearch.com. :)

I can agree anywhere from slightly to significantly with the 24 listed above. I am probably alone in thinking that "Top Cat" is better than "Ren & Stimpy."

Yeah, since, you know, they're such great characters. I really relate to the depth put into "must eat bird" and "must avoid death in funny ways" in comparison to the multi-faceted, unpredictable duo of Ren & Stimpy.

There's more characterization in a one minute clip of Ren & Stimpy than there are in all of the Wile E/Road Runner cartoons combined.

I love Ren & Stimpy. I've called Kricfalusi a genius and heir-apparent to Bob Clampett right here on these boards many times. I can't wait for the NEW episodes to come out!

And I fully respect your opinion, TheRedEye.

    BUT -(big but:D)

Chuck Jones could do more with Wile E. Coyote's EYEBROWS than JohnK can do with any of Ren & Stimpy's farting, ranting, eye-bulging and puking (not that there's anything WRONG with farting, ranting, eye-bulging and puking - it's freakin' hilarious)!

And it's not JUST about "must eat bird", and "avoid death in funny ways", either.

If you'll forgive a bit of "MikeBarrieritis" IMHO, it's about wanting someting so badly that you'll do almost anything to get it. Beg, borrow, steal, keep buying inferior mail-order merchandise, etc. There is real human truth AND great comedy to be enjoyed in BOTH series, okay?

So please - Don't dis the MASTER.

Could the judgement (I don't mean TV Guide's) have been based more on the DePatie/Freleng RRs than the classic Chuck Jones ones? Full agreement on the expressions on Wile E., he may be the superior character to the bird!

Ren & Stimpy is the M*A*S*H of this list, it should rank MUCH higher than its competitors from South Park and Beevis & Butthead (in the interest of full disclosure, I only like R&S out of the 3, personally. I'd grudgingly allow a SP character on, but low on the list.

So glad to see Mickey lower on the list; I'd bet mainstream America would put Mickey at #1. Still ranked higher than Popeye, though. :(

DAFFY DUCK: "14?!? Jeeth, all these yearth playing ttthhhhhecond fiddle to that darn rabbit, and NOW I'm playing 14th fiddle??????" (pause, glares at TV Guide) "You're detttthhhhhpicable!"

    Random thoughts:

It's good to see classic animation had a good showing on the list.

I'm kind of suprised they listed the Grinch so high. I don't disagree with it, I just think it's interesting that he only starred in one special that only airs once a year and he got #5, compared to some of these other characters that had full-fledged series. I'm glad to see it still has such an impact.

Angelica Pickles I disagree with. I would've put her or Tommy on the list about 6 years ago, but not after this drek that is the new episodes. If she was to be on the list at all, I would've put her much lower down.

I can't help but think Space Ghost got on the list because of Space Ghost Coast to Coast. I mean, his previous shows weren't that popular, and if they were gonna put super heroes on the list, Batman and the Justice League definitely deserved a place on there. Maybe they weren't counting characters the didn't originate on TV. That would disqualify Batman and Justice League, since the originated in comic books.

    What, no Johnny Quest?

What I would like to know is this...WHO IN THE HELL MADE THIS LIST

My take is this....That they had a bunch of TV GUIDE employees sniffing some very strong paint thinner when doing this list not really doing their homework to which they failed (with the exception of Bugs Bunny at #1) very badly. How on earth could you say that "The Powerpuff Girls" is better than "Daffy Duck"??? Am I missing something here gang????

And the piece of $#!@ Pikachu (did I spell this right???) is better than Mickey Mouse, Popeye, Tom And Jerry, Donald Duck???? SOMEONE PLEASE SHOOT ME NOW !!!!!

Let me get this straight for one second here, Arthur is better and more famous than a feline who made his screen debut 83 years ago and who has delighted cartoon fans for over eight decades and his name is Felix The cat and a stupid aardvark who looks more like a bear is more popular than Felix ever was

This is the dumbest top 50 cartoon list I have EVER seen in my entire 35 years of life and it cleary tells you that TV GUIDE does not know what they're doing on such a list. You simply cannot put tv characters and theatrical characters in the same catagory for the 50 greatest cartoon stars, cause you won't get it right. If you are to do such a list then what you have to do is to separate both types of animation, for example a 50 greatest theatrical cartoon characters and then you do a 50 greatest tv cartoon characters, that way both lists are fare and balanced. That's the way you do it TV GUIDE..

And where, oh where is Huckleberry Hound, Tenneesse Tuxedo, Casper The Friendly ghost, Roger Ramjet, Linus The Lionhearted, Droopy, Deputy Dawg, Herman & Katnip, Ruff And Reddy and Goofy. This 50 greatest characters should have be done by people that know(besides our good friend Jerry Beck) what animation is all about......

Remember, any list that is produced today is going to be skewered towards the cartoons that are on today. Some of the new `toons that appear high up on the list may generate a "who?" if the same character is mentioned 15-20 years from now. This isn't just for the "Top 50 Cartoons" list, but for all the "Top 50" lists TV Guide has done in recent years.

The older a cartoon (or a sitcom, or a drama, or a TV theme song, or whatever TV Guide is rating) is, the better it has to be to make the list. That's why if TV Guide did the same poll in 2022, Bugs, Daffy and some of the other classic characters would still be where they are in the polll, while others (I'm talking to YOU, Angelica Pickles) will either be much further down or non-existant in the rankings.
