    Well, it's the old meaning of "gay," of course (as a synonym of "happy"). There was a comic called "Gay Comix" in the 80s/90s, however, that actually was about LGBT related subjects (it was created by famed cartoonist Howard Cruse):

    And interestingly, the Maxx was in one issue:

    Daphne imitating horror TV show host Elvira probably doesn't mean she gets to put her hair up often. :p

    As for Tessie, since it's a Marvel comic, she could (unless she has already) make a modern comeback... her or her granddaughter having some mutant power to summon fish? :p

    GCD :: Covers :: Windy and Willy

    You know what this is? It's DC's Many Loves of Dobie Gillis comic reprinted a few years later with different names on the characters. As you can see, it didn't work for long.

    Looks like Terry's getting desperate.
    GCD :: Cover :: SIP Kids #1

    Can you blame him though -- the US comics market sucks. The only things that sell are familiar properties and establishing just one property on your own is a herculean effort. Making weird spinoffs forever beats starving.

    GCD :: Cover :: Disney Primer #[nn]
    In 1994 Disney split its comics production -- the classic characters went to Gladstone Publishing and the Renaissance characters went to Marvel. This is the cover to a pamphlet introducing the Marvel titles. The whole run on the Marvel end lasted a year -- they were shoddier and worse-written than what came out of the "Disney Comics" lineup of the early 90's, but at least the Disney Afternoon comic was good.

    Monica's Gang has been referred to as the "Peanuts of Brazil." Well, imagine if somebody took the Peanuts characters, grew them into teenagers and put them in fantasy manga adventures. That is what this appears to be.

    It's like the 00s animesque craze flashing before my eyes. And yet, it really just looks like something from Archie comics at first glance.
