Just to let everyone know: Smith's home Furnishings went bankrupt in October 1995. I found a tape with two teasers about the story. Said tape also has a, gasp, Virtual Boy ad!

What's the show both those things are from? I guess I should ask that.

Different shows. The VB ad is from a showing of the movie Beethoven on KPDX, and the teasers are from KOIN.

Some sad news to report. Ron Tonkin, beloved seller of cars, has died.

I know; it's sad. His last name will live on.

I got five issues of "TV Life" from 1954-55, and during that time Portland only had 2 channels. 6 CBS (KOIN) and 27 (KPTV) NBC. I guess Portland wasn't big enough for an ABC or DuMont station. I can scan some stuff if you're interested.

KPTV (then cable channel 27) dropped the CBS feed on October 15, 1953 when it moved to KOIN 6; it continued to carry both ABC and NBC programming along with that of DuMont. When KLOR 12 was established on March 8, 1955, the ABC feed moved there, staying there until KGW 8 was established on December 15, 1956, thus making KLOR an independent station for the remainder of its existence through its end on April 30, 1957. On that day, KLOR and KPTV merged, becoming the KPTV 12 we knew and loved.

KGW 8 switched affiliations from ABC to NBC on April 26, 1959 (along with Seattle's KING 5), thus KPTV re-took the ABC affiliation, this time lasting through March 1, 1964, when a two-year-old, partially-independent station called KATU 2 took full affiliation of ABC, where it remains today. This started KPTV's 22-year quest as a fully independent station.

I guess they don't call you Classic TV Man for nothing.

I chose that username to reflect the fact I do like classic TV.

There had been UHF then... or VHF?

Hey, Cable TV was invented in Astoria, Oregon :) Don't believe me? Go up to the Astoria Column and look at the plaque...

This video should be somewhere on the FPO page:

Also, it's not Portland, but it's interesting.
    Medford TV news from 1980.

It really should. I'm about ready to go all HTML5 and give up complete compatibility. I want to redo the video library badly.

I could also use this JW Player you've been seeing around the Net, but they stick their own watermark there unless you pay to take it off. Beggars can't be choosers though.

    Yeah. I saw this elsewhere...

It looks less unwieldy than the old one...and I am fond of their new music (a package called "The Unexpected" by a firm in Nashville, 615 Music).

Speaking of KOIN, their new-ish owners LIN Media are selling to Media General. This'll mark the fourth time that KOIN has changed hands in the last decade...

I gotta say, this is pretty cathartic:

For those who don't live here, that is really an ad they ran (incessantly), with taxpayer money, for a website that did not work and never did work. The mortification of seeing that ad show up nationally on the Daily Show is offset by the well-deserved parody.
