Those Pokemon were just narrowly toeing the line between "misunderstood" and legitimately evil.

I thought that this episode was okay. I liked seeing Ash and his friends camping out together. I still say that the overall group chemistry with the new cast is pretty nice and believable, so giving them some more opportunities to be out together is nice. Lana's scary story leading to some over the top facial expressions was pretty hilarious. They were setting up for the mysterious Pokemon right away, even with Rockruff scaring them the first two times instead.

The Morelull were getting a lot of energy from them though. It was shown at least kind of in a more comical/over the top fashion, but all of them did look really weathered and thin just from the Pokemon absorbing their energy. If Lillie wasn't unaffected and able to cook them more food, they would have been in trouble, especially when they were affected multiple times. I thought that Lillie being unaffected was some possible foreshadowing of a big twist down the road for some reason, but it was just because she used Repels and Max Repels on herself. Admittedly, that is pretty fitting of Lillie to do. She would do that in the games too due to not having her own Pokemon to battle with. Ash's solution was completely in character too. Of course he'd give away all of his energy for a Pokemon and he'd regain it with every bit of food too. It's typical for a young protagonist like Ash to have a bottomless stomach. Even the rest of the classmates agreed that this was such a Ash solution.

So the Morelull wanted to get all of that energy in order to evolve into Shiinotic and restore a tree. While the imagery itself was pretty, I'm not sure if restoring one tree is enough to justify possibly endangering people. Like I said, they would have been in big trouble if Lillie wasn't there able to give the more food. If they were trying to save the whole forest, that would be a bit different since at least it would be saving homes for a lot of different Pokemon, but going all that far for one tree seemed a bit much. It still looked nice and the Shiinotic they met seemed to bond with Ash. Overall, it was an okay episode.
