How did this show become as big and popular as it is? I imagine nobody expected it to become the phenomenon it is back when it premiered in 1999.

The show's solid writing in its early seasons immediately helped make it a hit with kids and adults. It was able to beat Pokemon with kids on Saturday mornings, which is no small feat.

The show also had a lot of merchandising deals from the very beginning which basically gave Nickelodeon a license to print money.

It all had to do with cross-generational appeal & marketing

Nick's "next big thing" was NOT even supposed to be SpongeBob but rather Chalkzone

SpongeBob just happened to be in the right place at the right time!

Plus the concept was unique which helped draw people in

Funny you mention that because Chalkzone actually lasted 9 years, but only because of long delays.

Well can't you say the same for SpongeBob?

Look how long it takes for Nick to pump out new episodes!

Although in that case it's because they want to extend the show's lifespan

SpongeBob got renewed much more than ChalkZone did. It took several years for the last season of ChalkZone to air all its episodes.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't chalkzone series started in 2002 and canned in 2008, so that means 6 years right, or are u referring to chalkzone pilot on 1998 or 99?

Spongebob took time but surely began seeing popularity around the early 2000s, I think around the time the 1st movie aired was where its popularity peaked.

It became popular in late 2000 when premieres moved to the evenings. And in Summer of 2001, they started airing it five days a week.

I think it was suppose to be CatDog actually. They ordered 40 episodes right off the bat. And the merchandise for the show came out only a few months after it was on the air, while SpongeBob had to wait two years.

I mentioned Chalkzone because that's what it said when the show aired on NickSplat last year

But if Catdog really was supposed to be the "next big thing" then that's quite ironic considering it had the MAIN VOICE ACTOR from SpongeBob!

I think it was canned before then, but Nick stretched out the last season.

Oh I meant that in 2005 were announced cancellation, but we had to wait 3 years in 2008 to air remaining episodes...
Sorry I didn't make it clear
