Most people don't survive falls out of tall buildings, especially landing on rubble.

Well, to be fair, most people who get bit by radioactive spiders don't develop superhuman powers, either. The Spider-Man films aren't exactly the best at depicting reality as it should be.

Neither do I. Personally I think they've stretched that plot point out farther than they needed to. Yes, Peter has to live with the mistake that cost Ben his life, but just leave it at Peter having the occasional 'conversation with the dead' and stop trying to add new twists to the story.

Gary Ross is back in the saddle with his “Seabiscuit” star Tobey Maguire.

Ross has come aboard to rewrite the script for “Spider-Man 4,” the Sam Raimi-directed film that Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios will put into production early next year.

While Maguire has toplined both of the films Ross has directed (“Pleasantville” is the other), the “Spider-Man 4” deal comes more from Ross’s growing relationship with Sony.

Ross is rewriting to direct a Columbia Pictures film about cyclist Lance Armstrong. Though the film's focus is on Armstrong's recovery from testicular cancer to the triumph of winning seven Tour de France titles, the project has gained new relevance after Armstrong un-retired, returned to the Tour, and zoomed from back in the pack to second place this week.

Ross had also worked closely with the studio on “Tokyo Suckerpunch,” the film he expected to direct next. That picture got postponed when Anne Hathaway -- who planned to star with Maguire -- developed a scheduling problem.

The “Spider-Man 4” script was originally written by James Vanderbilt, and then rewritten by David Lindsay-Abaire.

As long as they lay off the villains. Let's just get back down to ONE villain. SM 3 was far too overcrowded. Let's see Mysterio or the Lizard be the sole villain of the next one.

The problem with SM3 wasn't the amount of villains. It was the execution. All three villains had different storylines that had nothing to do with each other so they had to cram all three arcs into one film.

Movies like Batman Returns, Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight show that multiple villains can be worked into the same storyline. Like how Sandman and Vulture were originally going to share the same plotline with Vulture making Sandman do all his dirty work.

No other villain can carry his own film. Especially Mysterio. He's not much of a physical threat. We need someone Spidey can physically battle. That's why in a two villain system you make him the physiological one.

They're not like GG and Ock. They can easily carry a film by themselves and they are also Spidey's greatest foes. Besides SM has a lot of good villains and it would be a shame for some of them not be in a movie because they keep using only villain per movie.

Really good to see them planning so far ahead already. Nice to hear they were really impressed by Vanderbilt's draft, too. I've heard his Zodiac script was pretty stellar as well.

And this is where hiring a 20 something actor to play a teenager comes back to bite them in the rump.

By the time 5 & 6 start filming, Tobey's going to be pushing 40 playing a (supposedly) early 20's Peter Parker. I'm just wondering if he's going to be able to keep up the appearance of a young Parker by the time we get to that point.

Then of course, the actors playing Aunt May and Uncle Ben are really getting up there in age, and I really don't want to see them recast should the unfortunate happen in this long wait between sequels.

I just don't see them all signing on again for yet another one, and how can they be writing Spidey 5 anyway if they don't know if it'll be a reboot or not?

The word reboot is being misused here by Variety. It's obvious that Sony isn't gonna reboot the franchise. If the movie is called "Spider-Man 5" then it's obviously not a reboot. Sony wants to freshen up the franchise. Or a better word might be retool. If Raimi-Magure-Dunst don't return for 5&6 the movie will still be a sequel but it'll be different from the first 4.

Recasting everyone will just most likely turn people off. It would be nice if Tobey did all six. It would be the first time since the old Superman movies that most of the cast stayed for more than three films in a superhero franchise.

    The Batman franchise disagrees.

Are you talking about the Nolan franchise? If so, it doesn't count because it was a reboot and it was eight years after the last Batman movie.(Which was horrible).

I'm talking about the franchise in general. 4 Batman's in 20 years has to count for something.
