Good animation but I had little idea WTF went on near the end. Why did Tetsuo turn into a bigass blob? And what happened at the end?

Tee-hee... you should've read the manga.

Anyway, Tetsuo's mutations are caused by the rapid increase of his psychic abilities. His body is no longer able to contain his power, so it begins to expand outwards without his consent. The baby is supposed to represent the innocence/evil of the newborn creature embodied in Tetsuo's power; at the same time, Tetsuo's final form is symbolic of the birth of a new era of human evolution, as his power continues to settle and manifest more gradually in the rest of humanity.

And stuff. I could go into it further, but I'm too tired.

OK, next Ghost in the Shell movies please! Specifically, what's up with that scene near the end of GITS2 which repeats like 3 times?

Otomo's thoughts are much more formed in the manga. If you want an answer look there.

I find it funny that in Appleseed,GITS, and his other series all use the Osprey as a means of transportation..seriously that plane was retired because it didn't even work right...the entire design even with the rotating wings was a major point of the unstability

Much more formed, but not necessarily more accessible. (-:

Way back in the ancient days when the anime forum was new and I thought that posting fresh question threads here was a good idea, I started a thread on this very topic (among others). Some good thoughts were brought up: http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=62026&

I'll go ahead and quote my own thoughts in that thread:

As I did in the previous thread, let me stress that that's only one interpretation, and not necessarily the most valid one out there.

Oh, and I think I'll go ahead and put a spoiler warning in the title of this thread, 'cause otherwise two-thirds of the thread will be in spoiler boxes.

Why did Kaori have to die? was she crushed by accident?

Yeah, it was an accident. Tetsuo wanted her to help him but he couldn't control how rapidly his body was mutating, so poor Kaori was trapped. I still think it was pretty gratuitous; her death was different in the manga and actually had meaning.

It's a shame Kaori had to die. She was a cool character. I've never seen the film (I'm hoping to watch it with my friend on Monday), but I did see like a few minutes of it. It seems like in the anime, Tetsuo is Kaoru's friend in the beginning. I hear the anime is very different becuase it was made during the manga, and also it doesn't show Akira (dammit), but at least I won't know what will happen in some parts.

I don't know how Kaoru died in the anime, but it looks like it didn't have meaning, so the manga's was better. I'm so excited to see Akira, BTW. That is, if I actually see it on Monday. I'll rent it if I do.

Well, at least he's in it, even though for a very short period of time.

    Read the manga, big differences.

And its very accesible, I see it in every manga section.

    Exspensive as a mother****er though.....

Akira is being released in $10 harcover volumes now that are B&N exclusives

GITS is only $15 and GITS 2 is $15 as well

You want expensive, try getting Intron Depot...50 bucks PER VOLUME, and there are 4 volumes. The thing is even if you got the entire collection of Dominion, Appleseed, Black Magic, Orion, and GITS(which is what ID features the art of) they would still be cheaper than getting the entire set of Intron Depot

I just got the manga from the library, since it's so expensive. I can't believe B&N's selling it for $10. It's usually like $25.

I was thinking more in terms of literary accesability, not market penetration. (-:

The manga is a truly detailed piece of science fiction but the anime Akira is pretty much about a bunch of dome-shaped explosions and a lot of yelling of the name "Tetsuoooo!".

It's truly amusing that film critics in America hold this up to a pedestal as an animated classic. IMO, even Steamboy is better than Akira.

I thought B&N canceled it because of bad sales?
