We’ve had a few threads like this in the past. We all know Nickelodeon is the ratings champ with kids (and total viewers). So, I don’t expect all Nick ratings to be posted here, but it wouldn’t hurt to have a thread specifically for it.

    ------

This is pretty cool. Nicktoons has been added to the list of networks that Cynopsis Kids posts daily ratings for in the kids 2-11, 6-11 and 9-14 demos.

The first two days available now are (from Cynopsis Kids 5/18/2010):

    Thursday, May 13, 2010 (6am-11pm)
    - 89,000 kids 2-11
    - 53,000 kids 6-11
    - 31,000 tweens 9-14

    Friday, May 14, 2010 (6am-11pm)
    - 72,000 kids 2-11
    - 36,000 kids 6-11
    - 31,000 tweens 9-14

Nicktoons is still far behind Disney XD, but Nicktoons is also in about 20 million less households (as of December 2009, Disney XD was in ~75 million households, while Nicktoons was in ~55 million).

This is very interesting data. It will be worth watching once the network adds all the new shows on the horizon (Dragon Ball Z Kai, Power Rangers, Voltron, etc.).

Thanks, Bryan; this is very interesting...,

I wonder, do they have ratings for the adults, or are many of the adults still too embarrassed to admit they watch cartoons.

The advertisers only care about the kids ratings since it's their target demographic and the one they're selling all those crappy toys to.

What stinks about all this is that Cynopsis doesn't give detailed ratings for night-time programming -- which is when most (I don't know if it's all) of Nick's premieres happen.

(Do they premiere anything on Saturday mornings?)

I still have press access -- from when I used to work at a newspaper -- to the weekly top 40 reports for cable. But that's everything and in the most widely-inclusive age demographic. You have to be a full-blown paying subscriber to the Neilsen service to get full lists and the age-group breakdowns.

Right now, the top is dominated by NBA playoff games, WWE, USA dramas, etc.

The highest rated Nick show for the week ending May 16 was the 9:30 am Saturday 5/15 showing of Spongebob, which ranked 10th for the week with a 2.5 rating. I don't recall there ever being a Nicktoons or DXD show in this top-40 list.

Nicktoons scored great ratings on Monday (May 31) with their Dragon Ball Z Kai and Avatar marathons. The ratings (which average 6am-11pm, and the marathons started at 10am) were as follows:

    Kids 2-11: 169,000 average viewers
    Kids 6-11: 124,000 average viewers
    Tweens 9-14: 118,000 average viewers

Those numbers are higher than any other day since we started seeing daily ratings for Nicktoons (May 13). The tweens 9-14 number is also more than double the normal ratings, plus they even beat Disney XD in the tweens 9-14 demo for the day (Disney XD had 97,000 viewers vs. Nicktoons’ 118,000 viewers).

Since the weekend, Nicktoons has really been growing in the ratings. No doubt the Avatar and Dragon Ball Z Kai marathons this past weekend were the main reason. Nicktoons even beat Disney XD on Sunday in tweens 9-14! Also, Monday and Tuesday’s ratings have been very high – very close to Disney XD even. No doubt the return of Invader ZIM (4:30-7PM) is a leading cause.

Here’s the ratings break-down since last Saturday for Nicktoons vs. Disney XD:

    Network: Kids 2-11 – Kids 6-11 – Tweens 9-14

    Saturday, June 19
    Nicktoons: 139,000 – 94,000 – 80,000
    Disney XD: 226,000 – 160,000 – 112,000

    Sunday, June 20
    Nicktoons: 134,000 – 92,000 – 97,000
    Disney XD: 203,000 – 143,000 – 96,000

    Monday, June 21
    Nicktoons: 136,000 – 106,000 – 120,000
    Disney XD: 288,000 – 216,000 – 172,000

    Tuesday, June 22
    Nicktoons: 166,000 – 125,000 – 139,000 (only 10K off from XD)
    Disney XD: 260,000 – 196,000 – 149,000

Not Nielsen ratings, but Nicktoons has also been leading to trending topics on Twitter lately. Monday afternoon (when ZIM began airing), Invader ZIM was a trending topic in the United States as well as many US cities (even being the #1 trend in NYC). Last tonight (well, right now), CatDog is the #9 trend worldwide (since a marathon is airing now)!

Nicktoons sure is gaining in popularity! Very good sign for TMNT and Power Rangers success this fall.

It going to be a tough battle between both networks when Voltron goes to Nicktoons and Disney XD gets Ultimate Spider-Man, Thor, and the new Avengers cartoon.

Last Friday, Nicktoons once again beat Disney XD in all three important kids demos, via Cynopsis Kids 6/29/2010:

    NICKTOONS: K2-11 190; K6-11 150; TWEENS 9-14 153
    DISNEY XD: K2-11 189; K6-11 136; TWEENS 9-14 87

Nicktoons is really on a roll. This can't be great news for Disney to hear, since XD is in about 20 million more households than Nicktoons is.

Man, it's going to be interesting to see the ratings once Voltron, Power Rangers, and other new shows start rolling in. Especially Power Rangers, considering Nick never had such a franchise in their line up before...

Nickelodeon networks 2nd Quarter 2010 Ratings: The most interesting is the Nicktoons blurb:

(And yes, all the bold and underline is from ME, not Nick.)

Also, FYI - DBZ Kai's timeslot last year was Avatar - which still pulls in great ratings.

I'm still kinda of new to this whole ratings format, and I always wanted to know exactly how they know the ages that are watching?

Nielsen Media generates the data based on the homes they use to collect data. Nielsen puts boxes in select number of people’s homes around the country (based on that areas population) and then uses that data to generate the bigger numbers using statistical formulas. That’s the gist of it anyway.

The “average Joe” may say that system is flawed – and they may be right – but ALL the networks that participate in ratings collection agree to their methods and pay for the data. So it matters in the sense that it matters to the networks – whether it’s accurate or not.

So, unless you have a Nielsen box in your home, your not helping nor hurting the TV ratings by watching or not watching something.

For the first time, in like ever (or at least as long as I’ve been seeing these ratings reports from Cynopsis – which has been YEARS), Disney Channel beat Nickelodeon in kids 6-11 last Saturday morning between 7AM-1PM:

Overall, last week Nickelodeon just barely beat Disney Channel in total viewers and kids 2-11. Disney Channel won in kids 6-11 and tweens 9-14.

The ratings reports explain why Nick made all those last minute changes late last week and this week.

Things will be somewhat back to normal this Saturday (tomorrow) morning, well see if that helps:
    7AM Jimmy Neutron
    7:30AM Fairly OddParents
    8AM Penguins of Madagascar
    8:30AM Fanboy & Chum Chum
    9-10AM SpongeBob
    10AM Penguins of Madagascar
    10:30AM Fanboy & Chum Chum
    11AM-12PM SpongeBob
    12PM The Troop (NEW)
    12:30PM iCarly

Last Saturday morning, Nick tied with Disney in the kids 6-11 demo:
I guess going back to the simi-normal line-up and removing the preschool shows was a good idea. Nick is going to stick with the same schedule this coming Saturday morning, we'll see how it continues to work.

(BTW, The Troop was also up nicely week-to-week, from 2.7 to 4.1!)
