Avengers: Age of Ultron Prelude TPB

Like the trade for the Winter Solider Prelude, this one was also pretty disappointing and plain filler. Just a pointless collection of an adaptation of the first Avengers movie, one new tie in comic that's only 16 pages, and a huge chunk of selected material from Marvel Comics. If you just want the new content, you're better off just buying the digital version of the new tie-in - "This Sceptre'd Isle." Even then, this tie-in, also like the Winter Soldier Prelude plays it too safe and doesn't offer much. This Age of Ultron Prelude pales in comparison to the Avengers Prelude - a very ambitious work that connected the Phase 1 movies together and also an entertaining Black Widow story that happened to have a Ten Rings op. While granted, Phase 2 didn't have a bunch of movies happening at about the same time - you expect more for something with the 'Avengers' brand name. This and the Winter Soldier Prelude really reflect how limited the writers were in terms of what they could play with and what was strictly reserved to be revealed in the movie.

"This Sceptre'd Isle" roughly takes place before, during, and leads up to the end credits teaser of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In essence, the story is a 16 page explanation about how Baron Strucker ended up with Loki's Scepter. Arguably, fans already put one and one together in the aftermath of HYDRA rising up and taking a bunch of bases and items during The Winter Soldier. To sum it up:
    Some thoughts on the tie-in:
    • Like Grant Ward, Mark Smith is another Maria Hill hater.
    • The emphasis on the connection between the Tesseract and Scepter sounds like something that will be revealed in Age of Ultron - likely the fan speculation the Scepter has one of the Infinity Stones. Hence, when Black Widow touched one to the other in Avengers - they nullified each other? Pretty much, either use a Stone separately from the others or all together.
    • Nice to see a bit more on Baron Strucker, who up until now was just one teaser and a handful of references to on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
    • Nice to see Sokovia and its sub-plot set up but it's mainly just what we already knew.
    • Pietro was the one that pushed to join the experiment. Wanda was hesitant and thought the offer was just another lie.
    • Some text provides insight into Pietro and Wanda with hyper science terms for super speed and telekinesis. Notes on Pietro observe increased metabolism and improved thermal homeostasis. Wanda's observe Neuro-Electric Sensitivity and Micro-Cellular Manipulation.

I honestly wonder what they could do for other prelude comics. for Civil War's I imagine they'll probably explain what Falcon was doing during AoU.

It's possible. At this point, I would guess Falcon or Winter Soldier would be the focus of the Civil War Prelude. In the past, War Machine was the focus of the Iron Man 3 Prelude.

    7/1: 1) Ant-Man Prelude #1 and #2

This was a very great read in anticipation of the movie coming up later this month.

It was intriguing to learn Hank Pym's first field mission was to East Berlin during the Cold War (in an interview, the writer Pilgrim posited it to be mid-1980s in the Gorbachev era) and before that, he was an R&D consultant at S.H.I.E.L.D. but amusingly enough, butted heads with Howard Stark a lot apparently. Though it was jarring to see Howard wasn't interested in a moral debate about who could use the Ant Man Suit. Something the trade doesn't include, in the single issue for #2, the recap revealed Pym discovered the Pym Particles while he was already with S.H.I.E.L.D.

Peggy Carter once again made another delightful appearance and boiled down long intense training for an agent for a consultant to simply - learn to improvise in the field. Then shot at him. Good thing he was quick to shrink...

On this 'group of German radicals' in the prelude. Nice way to tie in The Winter Soldier by making the HYDRA tech they were trying to reverse engineer none other than the same type of (or maybe the same) memory suppression machine used on Bucky by Alexander Pierce in the present.

Seeing Hank in action was pretty awesome. Using his brains to stop and use the antipersonnel device as a distraction, pushing equipment around, casting a shadow, whispering into the leader's ear. And a flying ant. Yes! But even though the machine was faulty and Hank destroyed the schematics -- still came off as a hollow victory since we know the machine still gets used by HYDRA and even S.H.I.E.L.D. to a degree with the T.A.H.I.T.I. Project.

All in all, really cool to learn how Hank became a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent but the downside is you sort of want to know more. 40 pages went by real quick. Still, a tad bummed nothing was learned about Janet -- maybe they never met yet -- but not a surprise they're keeping that close to the vest for Phase 2. Was also wondering if Stark and Carter were going to be billed as Co-Directors but no, simply 'Founding Member of S.H.I.E.L.D.'

And for perspective, this took place in the mid-80s around the same time Agent Coulson and May graduated the Academy and started their first field missions.

    2) Infinite Comic Scott Lang

This one sets up Scott Lang's morals and shows how he ended up in prison. Set after Scott and Maggie's daughter Cassie was born, Scott is compelled to return to his 'Robin Hood' schtick and target Vistacorp - a Silicon Valley company that was overcharging customers - who fired Scott for trying to tell the truth and branded him a disgruntled employee trying to extort them. But he goes to far and breaks into his ex-boss' home - steals jewelry and crashes his sports car into the pool.

As far as the timeline of things, I'd guess his arrest and imprisonment was around 2012.

Some other nice bits was Scott reminding himself he has a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Luis, and Peachy. Also, on page one, that bug flying around...

All in all, the Ant-Man Prelude was a well done effort at exploring a little more of both Hank and Scott's origin stories so to speak.

9/9: Starting October 28, a new series called 'Guidebook to the Marvel Cinematic Universe'. Naturally, Iron Man 1 is the first. Then November 25, an Incredible Hulk/Iron Man 2 flip book. Preview pages for Iron Man 1 dropped today.

    9/15: December solicits

    1) Civil War Prelude #1 and #2
Ugh. So #1 and 2 are the adaptation of Iron Man 3 and #3 and #4 look to be the Winter Soldier adaptation. I guess the only new story will be an Infinite Comic. Really disappointing if true.

    2) Guidebook to the MCU: Thor
10/21: Guidebook to the MCU: Captain America: The First Avenger out 1/27/16
Also in January is the Civil War Prelude #3 and #4 (which are just adaptations of The Winter Soldier) out 1/6 and 1/27.

On Amazon, the Civil War Prelude trade is set for April 12, 2016 so probably late March in shops.

11/17: Guidebook to the MCU: The Avengers out February 24, 2016
12/15: Civil War Prelude trade confirmed for April 13, 2016 but no new info. Still no clue what the Infinite Comic is about or when it releases for sale online.

1/19: April's Guidebook to the MCU will be Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World
Loving the covers of this series.

A non-canon tie in comic to Civil War also releases in April, Captain America: Road to War
The Art of Movie hardcover slipcase for Civil War also appeared in the solicit

These are getting out of hand they're just art books or recaps of other movies, which is completely pointless since we live in an age where movies can be watched on a whim.
