So the Dollmaker is going to be one of the big villains of the season? Kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel, but I suppose it can't be helped given the prequel status.

    Episode #2

Damn, this is some acting. The guest actor playing the street kid did a great job keeping up with Logue. Taylor and Mackenzie also continue to kick rear end. Smith playing Mooney as a character playing a character is a great deal of fun.

I love how characters claim Falcone is going soft, but he turns around and shows he is still not to be trifled with. The nice thing about John Doman's performance is you can never quite read what his exact emotion is. It's a clearly confidence-based restraint.

Perhaps it's just the work of Mackenzie and Logue, but Gordon and Bullock do feel like they're getting friendly.

Finally, Bruce as a child explored. You can easily see how he is unbridled obsession. It makes no sense for him to not already be in the middle of training. I do hope this storyline actually does somewhere, it would be terrible to spend the entire series waiting for him to eventually be Batman.

Oh, snap. Kyle Massey (ex-That's So Raven, Cory in the House) resurfaces here. Doesn't get much, but he's got some chops. Hope they find something for him down the line.
Otherwise, I wasn't really feeling this episode as much as last week.

Why'd Falcone have his men beat up Fish's boytoy? Just to show off that he was still in charge? Penguin is acting more like Joker in full psychopath mode. Gordon realizing he's responsible for not kill him will no doubt be an interesting moral quandary in the future. So the woman thought it was a hoax and had no interest in the return of her son who was being tortured then killed? If they're going to tie Kyle directly to Batman's origin, it could be an interesting twist in the mythos. That actress is awfully precious for a character who's supposed to be what, 8 or 10? So Thomas Wayne is opposed to psychiatric help why? I thought Barbara was Gordon's daughter, in what continuity was she his wife first, post-Crisis? Still think Logue is an inspired bit of casting. Is the actress who plays Barbara a model, perchance? In a city where everyone else is grimy and looks like they walk out of the rain, she doesn't have a hair out of place. Bruce already appearing out of the shadows was nice. They're really going to struggle to find stuff for him to do at this point, hopefully they'll keep him to a minimum, at least this season.

Different Barbara. Sometime after James Jr is born, Jim's brother dies (and sister in law,) and he adopts his niece, Barbara. Then his wife (and son) leave him, and eventually Jim ends up with Sara Essen.

Falcone had Lazlo beaten to send a message to Fish. He's not soft, he's wise.

Selina is thirteen, one year older than Bruce.

Thomas Wayne believed Bruce would be strong enough to cope without psychiatric help. Obviously he was wrong, given the kids grows up to be a crackerjack loser in most continuities, but the excuse here is still a great tool for allowing Bruce to become Batman as soon as possible.

Thomas Wayne only said for Bruce to make his own decisions. He wasn't against psychiatric help. Bruce was against it so Bruce hasn't gotten it yet. I think they planted that seed so that Bruce eventually seeks out Leslie Thompkins. He needs another adult besides Alfred and Gordon. The guy's mom had no idea the guy was kidnapped. It was a piece of dark comedy to establish Penguin as an awkward misfit bad guy.

Pretty sure Selina said she was 13, a year older than Bruce.

I actually enjoyed this episode more than the pilot since they are actually developing the secondary characters in this episode (at least in regards to the Penguin and Selina Kyle). It would be interesting to see who actually killed Bruce Wayne's parents and whether or not the Penguin will take down Fish Mooney!
