You also have to remember that the budgets for Ant Man and even Origins: Wolverine didn't START at 150 million. They were amped up to 130/150 for other reasons. Like Edgar Wright leaving Ant Man and them needing to hire another direction after a lot of the pre-production was done, or all those action re-shoots added to Origins: Wolverine. Those amped up the project some, so Gambit starting with that seems even more hefty. Especially as not only is this Gambit untested, but we don't even know how he's going to connect in with the rest of the Marvel movies. Wolverine is the direct link or at least player that ties all the X-Men together, and Ant Man even before releasing was going to be in the MCU and is going to be in their next movie. Where exactly is Gambit going to appear again after this for audiences to look forward too? Also thinking about it considering the nature of Ant Man's power it makes sense why it'd take so much work getting that right and again at least Jackman was a star as Wolverine to ask a good deal for his pay. How is Gambit going to cost so much anyway? Honestly with it only having one big profile hero we know of it should be closer in terms of budget to Deadpool then Wolverine. Yes Gambit's skills will probably take some money to put on the big screen right... really 150 million dollars enough?

I doubt Mr. Sinister would be in this, he's too big a name and character. Best to keep him around for the next X-Men film.

Well, FOX would be wise to steer away from this as soon and as quickly as possible. Chattum is not a comicbook fan like Ryan Reynolds, and can he really pull off a New Orleans accent? Seriously, this was looking bad really quick.

If Tatum is off the project and this source is 100% accurate then Fox should probably try and get the Gambit movie out of development as soon as possible. The only reason the movie was given so much of a push was for Tatum who was the big draw for them to push it out so quickly and with so much money behind it. But if that's no longer the case then there isn't really a reason for this one to come out, especially as there's already two X-men related film next year.

I do have some doubts about this one though: why would Tatum have spent so long and be so long in development for this film if he was going to leave when pre-production was about to really get in swing and filming dates had started? Seriously unless he saw things coming together and didn't think they'd wind up any good you'd think he'd hold of on a directorial debut until having a big comic book super hero film under his belt to further his cred and the like. Not to mention this was a passion project for him and not something people just requested so again why sign off on it now?

Well, he and Joe Roth (who's busy rebooting all of Disney's animated filmography) had another 'passion project' in development with a "Peter Pan Begins" project. This was a few years before this year's "Pan". That project went nowhere.

The first I'm hearing of this. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In "Gambit's" case, he's pretty much been the spokesperson of the movie. It's sort of like 'The Rock' with Black Adam. Every subsequent interview took note of one progress or another (though the most I've seen is just him talking about the character or how far he's prepped for the role).

Star power is currency in Hollywood. This project is only happening because an interviewer asked Chattum about cbm's and he mentioned this character. This was just before X-Men: DOFP, so FOX was desperate.

Shuler-Donner then met with him the next year, and here we are. If he's serious, then, we will see.

Also remember that Edgar Wright was working on Ant-Man for (almost?) 10 years, before leaving just before shooting was about to start.

Yeah, without Tatum, I don't think this Gambit solo movie is going anywhere but down. He was the one pushing for it, he was the main draw for it, and what the studio was heavily promoting about the film. So losing him pretty much just kills any chance it had of getting off the ground and really going into production.

I guess then the question is why he'd leave, especially considering how much he'd been the driving force for making this movie and playing Remy in live-action...maybe he didn't like the studio's ideas or how they were handling things? Maybe it started to look like another Origins ?

Endless possibilities as I await for this rumor to either blow over or stick. My money's on scheduling conflicts because Tatum is pretty active in Hollywood & for that reason The Wrap mentions something about a directorial gig.

I would hope he's serious. We haven't really spoken about his affinity for the role.
-He's physically cultured to the point where he could convincingly pull off a martial artist
-He was raised near Mississippi bayous as a kid,
so the Cajun accent (with some voice training) came through fluently
    -He's a good, charismatic actor

    Not really.

Tatum has closed the deal to star.

The article says the sticking point was back end compensation, as in how much of a cut of the box office he'd get.

Yeah like I said I thought it was off he'd spent so much time trying to get the movie together and actually getting a date and director and all these character notes and back out now. And honestly it makes sense that this was more a case of "trying to secure back end deals and involvement in other X-Men projects." Actually thinking about it, Channing Tatum may be the first actor to go into a movie that's a huge draw and is making these kind of negotations right on the table before things start up. Yes Robert Downy Jr has that now with Civil War and other Avengers related film, but he didn't have that when he started out as Iron Man. Neither did Hugh Jackman or Patrick Stewart or Ian McKellan though those you could say started back in the days when that was much less of a thing. As nowadays the comic book movie stars for Marvels are either more unknown actors, in more supporting parts or just aren't as interested in playing the big Hollywood game. Neither of which applies to Tatum who yeah is a big draw and the only reason we're even going to get a Gambit movie. So I guess he was successful in flexing that muscle to get more residuals. Hope this leads to him churming out a product that makes him earn all that money he's going to make for this.
