Was flipping through the channels when suddenly I saw Jennifer Connelly cradling a baby and complaining about how much she hated him. Labyrinth was just starting. I had never actually seen the whole thing. I was disappointed with the main character, who is basically Alice -- she wanders around and reacts to more interesting characters than her, and she never knows what she's doing. Were it not for her social skills and ability to make quick friends, she would have been meat in that maze within ten minutes. The puppet cast was far more interesting; this IS a Henson movie. His ability to make felt and cloth come to life really shone here. Highlights included the Bog of Eternal Stench, a constantly farting and belching swamp where "if you fall in, you stink forever!" For half the movie (or at least it feels like it) the mortal danger isn't the threat of death, but smelling like a toilet. The climax is a giant Puppet War with fuzzy things running all over the place and bashing each other. A giant named Ludo can make rocks bend to his will, and once he starts using that power the battle is pretty much over. Also, Bowie is in it. ADDITIONAL NOTICE: ALF has started running on MeTV! Weeknights at 9:30.
