My most favorite cover is Ratatat's cover of Bjork's Wanderlust

One of the few covers I like more than the original.

I don't listen to a lot of today's mainstream music. However, I can reach back into my memory for the following:

"Lonely People", covered by Jars of Clay. A brilliant reinterpretation of America's original.

"Pink Cadillac", covered by Natalie Cole. A Springsteen album cut gets a more danceable makeover.

"Because the Night", covered by 10,000 Maniacs (Natalie Merchant's last single with the band). Faithful to the original.

"Smooth Criminal", covered by Alien Ant Farm. At least it's easier to understand the lyrics, because sometimes with MJ, you can't follow the words.

"I'll Be There", covered by Mariah Carey w/Trey Lorenz. This was what eventually led Lorenz to spin off and try his hand as a solo act. Best cover Mariah's done.

"Hazy Shade of Winter", covered by The Bangles. Turned out to be their pentultimate single of the 80's. Simon & Garfunkel never sounded so bouncy.

[On the other hand, Times Two's cover of "Cecilia" was out of sync.]

"You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling", covered by Hall & Oates. Faithfully Righteous! :D :D :D

"Crimson & Clover", covered by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. I prefer this Tommy James cover over Billy Idol's rendition of "Mony Mony".

"Easy", covered by Faith No More. I saw these guys open for Billy Idol, and they had people flicking their Bic's on this faithful cover. Lionel Richie had to be proud.

"The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia", covered by Reba McIntire. I had Vicki Lawrence's orignal LP, in which she covered "Little Green Apples", among others, but Reba nailed "Lights" dead-center.

Yeah, I know. I'm showing my age here with all the non-punk covers, but, hey.....!

The Burning Sensations cover of The Modern Lovers "Pablo Picasso" makes an already cool song fitthe dirty underground feel of the movie it was used in, Repo Man. Really awesome.

I normal don't like country music but I like Dwight Yoakam's "I Want You to Want Me" better than the Cheap Trick version. I just find it catchier.

That's a cover? I can think of other songs with that title but I've never heard anyone else sing this specific one.

I thought it might have been, but when I went to check, it turns out it wasn't. I meant to remove that from my list, but I guess I forgot. I've taken it out now though.

I think I remember Social Distortion covering some song, but if they have, I can't remember it right now.

Social D covered Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire". That's probably what you're thinking of.

    Yeah that was probably it.

Anyway, some other songs I just remembered were "Don't Turn Around" by Ace of Base and "How Soon is Now?" by Love Spit Love.

Johnny Rivers' version of Huey "Piano" Smith's "Rockin' Pneumonia". Sorry for bumping up an old thread.

I actually prefer The Art of Noise's cover of "Kiss" over the original Prince version. I also like Reel Big Fish's cover of Duran Duran's "Hungry Like the Wolf" more than the original.

I wasn't aware it was a cover but the Pet Shop Boys version of "Always On My Mind" is really good.

Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon) was pretty good at making covers, even if in the end they don't really end up sounding like the originals. My favorites are his versions "Shock Me" by KISS and "Tiny Cities Made of Ashes" by Modest Mouse, 2 songs I wasn't a big fan of in the first place.

Also, there's the obvious "Hurt" (Nine Inch Nails) cover from Johnny Cash

Stevie Wonder's cover of the Beatles' "We Can Work It Out". It has an energy the original doesn't.

Rage Against the Machine's cover of Cypress Hill's "How I Could Just Kill A Man". Same reason. It actually sounds angrier than the original.
