When Dragon Ball Kai came to an end 27 March 2011 the world was led to believe the fourth Dragon Ball cartoon series had come to an end plagued by both controversy and a national disaster. After initial cryptic Tweets from Furukawa Toshio, surprising news of a revival for the revival arrived over a year later when on 06 November 2012 Tanaka Mayumi casually blogged about recording the Majin Buu arc for Dragon Ball Kai. Now, five years one day after its initial premier, Dragon Ball Kai returns with the Majin Buu arc.

Seven years have passed since the battle with Cell. Son Gohan now commutes to Satan City for high school. Finding he cannot ignore trouble whenever it strikes, be it bank robber or bus hijackers, Gohan takes on the superhero persona of the Great Saiyaman. Videl, daughter of the very Mister Satan who claimed to topple Cell, is Gohan's classmate and fellow crime fighter. Blackmailed into participating in the Twenty-Fifth Tenka'ichi Budoukai, Gohan soon finds himself in the middle of a battle between gods, wizards, and demons!

    Cast

Nozawa Masako: Son Gokuu, Son Gohan, Son Goten
    Horikawa Ryou: Vegeta
    Furukawa Toshio: Piccolo
    Kusao Takeshi: Trunks
    Tsuru Hiromi: Blooma
    Watanabe Naoko: Chichi
    Hirano Aya: Dende
    Kikinuma Shino: Videl
    Ishizuka Unshou: Mister Satan
    Babidi: Bin Shimada
    Majin Buu: Shioya Kouzou

    Narration: Yanami Jouji

Kikinuma Shino previously voiced Videl in One Piece Episode #590 and the Fuji TV Premium Saturday cut of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. Minaguchi Yuuko, the voice of Videl for Dragon Ball Z, was unavailable for recording due to studying English in the United States. Yanami Jouji hands the role of Babidi to Shimada Bin. Yanami was never formally credited as Babidi in Dragon Ball Z, but had continued to voice the character even during recent video games. Shimada is no stranger to Dragon Ball, having voiced Broli in three motion pictures as well as having replaced Aono Takeshi as the voice of God during Dragon Ball Kai.

Titles for episodes #100-102 have hit, thus confirming what was previous said.

Episode #101: “Gohan’s the Teacher! Videl’s Introduction to Flight”

That should cover up to Dragon Ball Z episode #208.

It's less of a commitment to watch a movie for one night rather than a year-long series that has little new to offer. Dragon Ball Kai will probably do okay in the ratings, but otherwise we have two years of precedent to tell us it is not going to make Fuji TV and Toei Animation much in the way of capital.

    Episode #99

    Dragon Ball Chapters: #421-424p2
    Dragon Ball Z Episodes: #200-201

Oh God, this is so painful. Sumitomo's score is sometimes okay, but Audio Directors Motoyama Satoshi and Nagasaki Yukio's wall-to-wall use of it is terrible. Dialogue scenes do not need music just to simulate the illusion of story advancement. Good God, this is just atrocious. Two pieces of music were re-used from Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.

The new Opening and Ending animation is pretty iffy. It looks like Yamamuro didn't recruit any good key animators to work under him. It also looks like some of the CG Metro West buildings were re-used from Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.

I don't think it's ever hit me as hard as it did watching this episode that Minaguchi Yuuko would not be voicing Videl in Dragon Ball Kai. It's so depressing.

I think Sharpna is being voiced by Madono Mitsu'aki. Madono previously voiced Tenshinhan in Dragon Ball: Burst Limit and Dragon Ball: Tenka'ichi Dai-Bouken before the role was given to Midorikawa Hikaru for Dragon Ball Kai and media afterward.

Surprisingly enough, Blooma smoking was left in.

I seem to remember smoking being removed during the Saiyan arc.

Nope, in Dragon Ball Z episode #8 the Gyuu-maou is smoking a cigarette while talking to Chichi as she drives to the Kame House. In Dragon Ball Kai episode #5 those cuts are traced over and re-drawn without the cigarette.

Man, I almost forgot just how absolutely perfect the Saiyan arc was in Dragon Ball Z. Perfect acting, perfect music, and perfect placement of music. Audio Director Komatsu Nobuhiro and Miyashita Shigeru for Music Selection was a match made in heaven, especially considering the level of talented actors Komatsu was able to bring together.

I took a look. The new opening and ending are neat, but is it me or does the "remastering" process for these episodes look different than the previous 98 episodes? I wouldn't put it past Toei if this was done in a cheaper fashion, especially since these episodes were originally being produced solely for international markets.

The remastering is different. I do not believe any scenes in the first episode were traced over, either. I do not believe the colors have been adjusted and the film is much darker.

Videl learns Gohan's secret in the next episode. In episode #3 he begins teaching her to fly and in episode #4 the Twenty-Fifth Tenka'ichi Budoukai begins.

I should clarify: Q-TEC is no longer responsible for the remastering. Everything is being done in-house by Toei Company. I was never a big fan of Q-TEC, but the remastering done in-house isn't all that good, either.

Toei Animation is officially uploading next episode previews for their cartoons to their YouTube channel now. The preview for Episode #100 is available.

I think we can confirm that Dragon Ball Kai is even cheaper now than it was previously. Terrible synth, shoddy in-house remastering and no re-traced cuts. It's a year-long series with no sponsors, produced on the cheap with even less effort placed into it than the previous run.

Not all that surprised that this new season is done cheap(er) and half-heartedly. The decision to air the Buu arc on Fuji TV was clearly made quite late in production, and prior to that they were producing it mainly for the international audience. Toei probably didn't feel it was worth it to put much effort into something that (originally) wasn't going to air in Japan.

And Toei being Toei, they didn't bother to clean it up when it did get slotted for a TV run.

Yeah, the decision probably occurred when it was noticed that the Toriko movie bombed hard and the comic was coming up on a timeskip break. It's easier to slot Dragon Ball Kai there to hold the time slot down and focus on other untested properties that might actually make money than keep Toriko running. I should mention that the only members of the production committee for Dragon Ball Kai are still Fuji Televi and Toei Animation. No foreign company provided any actual money for the production of Dragon Ball Kai. Considering the even cheaper methods behind Dragon Ball Kai Episodes #99+ it's no surprise that the only two companies taking a hit on the project are the same two companies from the beginning.

By the way, the next episode preview for Episode #101 uploaded early.

Looks like... someone forgot to turn off the audio to Minecraft when they recorded that. ^^''

Anyways, nice to see to what extent this episode will cover.
