Throughout the Saturday Morning history, there have been animated versions of popular Prime Time shows.

They were done in order to bank on the popularity of their parent shows.

The trend began in the 70's with:

    1. The Brady Kids (spin-off of The Brady Bunch) - ABC - 1972-73
    2. Jeannie (spin-off of I Dream of Jeannie) - CBS - 1973
    3. Emergency +4 (spin-off of Emergency!) - NBC - 1973-74
    4. Lassie's Rescue Rangers (spin-off of the Lassie TV show) - ABC - 1973
    5. The Addams Family (spin-off of the Prime Time show of the same name) - NBC - 1973
    6. Star Trek: The Animated Series (spin-off of Star Trek: The Original Series) - NBC - 1973-74
    7. The New Adventures of Gilligan (spin-off of Gilligan's Island) - ABC - 1974-75
    8. Partridge Family 2200 A.D. (spin-off of The Partridge Family) - CBS - 1974

It continued in the 80's with:

    1. The Fonz and the Happy Days Gang (spin-off of Happy Days) - ABC - 1980-82
    2. The Lone Ranger (spin-off of the Prime Time show of the same name) - CBS - 1980-82
Note: Aired as part of The Tarzan/Lone Ranger Adventure Hour.
    3. Laverne & Shirley in the Army (spin-off of Laverne & Shirley) - ABC - 1981-82
    4. Mork & Mindy (spin-off of the Prime Time show of the same name) - ABC - 1982-83
Note: Aired as part of Mork & Mindy/Laverne & Shirley/Fonz Hour.
    5. Gilligan's Planet (second spin-off of Gilligan's Island) - CBS - 1982
    6. The Dukes (spin-off of The Dukes of Hazzard) - CBS - 1983
    7. Muppet Babies (spin-off of The Muppet Show) - CBS - 1984-91
    8. Little Muppet Monsters (second spin-off of The Muppet Show) - CBS - 1985
    9. It's Punky Brewster (spin-off of Punky Brewster) - NBC - 1985-86
    10. Fraggle Rock: The Animated Series (spin-off of the Prime Time show of the same name) - NBC - 1987
    11. ALF: The Animated Series (spin-off of the Prime Time show of the same name) - NBC - 1987-89
    12. ALF Tales (second spin-off of the Prime Time show of the same name) - NBC - 1988-89

Finally, it ended in the 90's with:

    1. Little Rosey (spin-off of Roseanne) - ABC - 1990
    2. Tales from the Cryptkeeper (spin-off of Tales from the Crypt) - ABC/CBS - 1993-94, 1999-2000

Of these, I've only seen Muppet Babies, Fraggle Rock and Sabrina. I've heard of some of the others, though...
There was also another cartoon that was based off a prime-time show that re-ran on Saturday mornings for a while on one of the Spanish over-the-air channels here around 2007 or so (I think Planeta U aired it?) called Betty Toons. It was a spin-off of Yo soy Betty, la fea, and was about a high-school aged Betty. Here's a review of one of the episodes from Platypus Comix, so you can get an idea of what it was like.

And the 70's and 80's solely relied on this tradition.

I read at http://www.oocities.org/wkrpvote/trivia.htm There was an aborted attempt to do a cartoon version of WKRP in Cincinnati with all the characters as dogs. Speaking of WKRP, one star of the cast Loni Anderson hosted a tv special called "The Fantastic Funnies" who could the comic strip counterpart for the later Who Framed Roger Rabbit and "Cartoon All-stars to the rescue" but that's a story for another thread. ;)

Btw, would the adventures of Mr. T being classified as an unofficial spin-off of the A-Team? And Turbo Teen was very inspired by Knight Rider....

Being the 80's a close winner by bringing twelve cartoons, four more than the eight ones that were produced in the 70's. :)

And it was Hanna-Barbera who came up with that odd idea. o_O

The Mister T cartoon is not directly or indirectly related to The A-Team, because is solely produced by Ruby-Spears and is done in order to capitalize on the popularity of B.A. Baracus.

And Turbo Teen is indeed based on Knight Rider. However like the Mister T show, is also made only by RS.

Turbo Teen was a parody of Knight Rider.
L'il Rosey was not a spin-off from Roseanne. Roseanne Barr created this separately from her prime-time show.

There have been two animated versions of The Lone Ranger, neither of which can be considered a spin-off from the live-action show. The first animated series was in 1966, as noted in another thread.

Jeannie cannot be considered a spin-off from I Dream of Jeannie, as you have a younger version of Jeannie with a new supporting cast. By the same token, the Muppet cartoons are not connected with The Muppet Show in any way, as we're dealing with, again, younger versions of established characters.
