While we all know the "Hail Hydra" thing won't be permanent and is likely a misdirect it still feels like a major misstep. At best this is nothing different than what Marvel did with Superior Spider-Man and could lead to some great stories but at worst this could be a major character assassination. The issue itself was pretty ho-hum but the last couple pages, misguided as they are, do give it a bit of a jolt. It's shock for shock's sake and the thing is I think it's such a mischaracterization that it doesn't feel natural at all.

I read about that lame plot twist online. A cheap stunt to deflect attention away from DC is all it is, and that's a lot of what Marvel has done under Dan Buckley. Cheap stunts. DC's doing right by the consumers by lowering prices. Marvel keeps theirs overpriced to soak the same consumer base, and flood the market with lame ideas like this.

When it bombs, and it will, then the spin doctors will say that Steve was brainwashed by the Cosmic Cube (which is likely what really happened) with false memories to cover this nonsense. Remember, "Civil War" has been out for three weeks, and all this does is throw shade on the movie. I wonder who the editorial jabroni is who told Nick Spencer this was what they wanted......

I've not read the book and have no intention to. I grew tired of the shock for the sake of shock tactic that Marvel deploys years ago, and this is one of their worst, just like Spider-Man unmasking in Civil War.

No doubt some BS retcon will do away with the story in a year or two, but I hope people drop the book before #2 comes out.

Honestly seeing Captain America being a double agent seems like it is only made just to revert at the end, though I was still surprise to see on Wednesday the shocker.

Damn Spencer! Damn Brevoort! and Buckley and everybody else at Marvel who went along with this! I don't care when this is "ret-coned" away for it never should have been done in the first place. I was thinking of going to go back to comics after years of being out of them but now Marvel can cram it!

I wonder if this shock value event will have some sort of long lasting impact in the future of this continuity, or like every other shock value stuff, will be just another discarded remnant of the past.

I really like the new costume, not fond of him not having a rounded/oval shield.

Before I talk about the last page, I want to ask this - Is the writer "subtly" calling conservatives/republicans/etc Nazis through the Red Skull's speech? Keep politics out of my entertainment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now with the last page, and the internet's reaction to it. Seriously? It's comics. It might not REALLY be Cap. It could be an imposter. He could be brainwashed. He could be a double agent. He could be from an alternate universe where he is a member of Hydra. The list goes on. We all say how we're tired of gimmicks and shock value, so how come the internet still continues to react and not just roll their eyes and shrug it off? It's going to be back to normal, or how it's SUPPOSED to be (according to extremely passionate fans who don't like what they're seeing).

I bought issue 1 to give it a chance (which I intended from the start, way before internet reaction). Regardless of potential political messages and the last page, I don't think I'll be continuing with the series.

Yes and there is nothing "subtle" about it. Both Spencer and Brevoort are far left,SJW, libs(two of many at Marvel) who have been useing the books to impose their extreme anti-white socialist politics for a while, starting with "All New All Different Marvel".

That's a good possibility, I did not think of it.

If by 'all' you mean the ones actually used to the gimmick so much we don't give them a second thought or whine about some odd choice, then we are not part of the crowd reacting negatively like its something new and insulting to the fans. ;)

Welp, as it turns out, it was false memories.

And if you think that's crazy, how about the equally lame ideas for Iron Man?
