    Episode 3
Japanese Title: The Devil Princess of Jurai
Dub Title: The Devil Princess of Jurai

WARNING: Spoilers will not be tolerated! Yes, I realize this series has been around since 2002, and I realize it did air on the FUNi Colours TV anime block (It aired back in 2006, so this isn't a dub premiere), but this is its first exposure on [adult swim].

Synopsis: Seina Yamda is your average ordinary everyday teenager, if you take away one thing. Seina is the most unlucky boy known of in the entire universe. After visitng his friend Kiniko after cutting through Tenchi's yard, Seina found himself on a GP ship headed for the prestigious GP Academy. A random hyperdrive jump led Seina right into the pirates den. Seina was given the controls of the ship, and every jump he made led them to more pirates. Eventually the hyperdrive broke down, but some luck appeared to be on Seina's side. They broke down right in front of The Devil Princess of Jurai. She used her Z-Drive to immobilize all the pirate ships, allowing the GP to have their biggest catch of pirates ever. Now The Devil Princess wants to meet Seina, but will she bring good news or crush his dreams of joining the GP?

    Your cast of characters:
[IMG] Seina Yamada: The main character who seems to have horrible luck. Seina has enlisted in the GP and hopes to use it to his advantage to gain the love of Kiriko.

[IMG] Mitoto Kuramitsu: Mitoto appears to be a friendly woman who has a passion for cleaning and who merely appears on the ship Seina has been picked up by. However Mitoto actually has high ties that could land everyone on the ship in great danger if the enemy should learn she is there.

[IMG] Seito Kamiki: Known as the Devil Princess, Lady Seto is one of the heads of the GP and also a member of the Juraian royal family. Her recommendation could very well be what causes Seina to join the GP or banishes him back to Earth with memories of nothingness.

[IMG] Miano Masaki: A member of Lady Seto's ship and a woman with a very familiar last name according to Seina.

[IMG] Kanemitsu Hirata: An aide for Lady Seto. He has the unfortantate priviliege of informing people if they actually qualify for the GP Academy as well as providing Seto advice that can help the royal family.

[IMG] Ryoko Balta: This mysterious woman is one of the leaders of the pirates, but when she sees what Seina has caused to occur, she quickly gains a great interest in him and wonders what she will do if he becomes her enemy.

"Nice to drop by, Seina Yamada."
    Did you mean that literally?

    Did she say Masaki?

Oh, let him join. His parents already declared him legally dead.

Ah, now the stuckup bureaucrat saying the hero can't be there for whatever reason. Well, I'm sure this will lead to Seina's inevitable departure and an early end to the series.

Seriously, didn't they have a "what species are you" or "planet of origin" option on the application form?

    "Tied up." Har-dee-har-har.

"Sorry, it's my first day in space."

"Oh, that's what they all say."

I'm...still used to the OTHER Ryoko.

Something tells me she'll be back.

I'm beginning to think that Tenchi Muyo! and Excel Saga are two great tastes that do NOT taste great together.

"There's no future in piracy." Unfortunately, there's too many people in the real world who think otherwise.

I thought that this was a pretty dull episode. Seina wanting to stay in the Galaxy Police when he's barely done anything didn't really click with me. Maybe if he actually went through something more significant than warp jumping over and over again to make him want to stay here and if his parents didn't just practically abandon him anyway, then maybe his desire to stay in the group could have worked. I also think that it's a pretty bad decision to keep Seina around just because of his special bad luck talent. While that did end up getting those pirates, it seems like his bad luck powers can easily cause missions to backfire and put them in potentially dangerous situations. Though, the Galaxy Police doesn't look like a well thought out organization thus far. I'll admit that I did laugh once, but that was from that terrible line about how marriages are like ice cream flavors. Overall, this episode was kind of dull. This show is still rather boring, the characters aren't interesting and the humor is pretty bad. It still seems like a bad decision to bring to the block, but I guess I'll give it some more episodes to see if it works for me later on.

Seina's bad luck doesn't really make a whole lot of sense when you consider that it took a great amount of GOOD LUCK for it to turn out well. I mean what are the chances that they would lead them all to Seto the one person that could take out an entire fleet? just as slim as him warping and running into more pirates. "Bad luck" apparently only works as a "gift" if its coupled with amazing "good luck" to balance luck against it. Not to mention they praise Siena for capturing the pirates and yet his strategy was pretty much just laying bait; so the GXP could not think to capture pirates by laying bait? Really it just looks rather stupid of the pirates to all go chasing after the same ship... you would think that more of them would have caught on to the idea that it was a trap, or atleast would have realized that they would probably have to fight the other pirates for the spoils. Honestly, it just feels like Seina is being rewarded without actually earning it. Whole story feels rather weak...

The voice acting has been pretty bad, Balta in particular... Also I can't help but note Seto's line about how she doesn't like to judge other's people destinies... even though she has a hobby of arranging marriage's amongst influencal people that could effect countless people... Though I'm not sure I should pay it no mind since it seems like it was was trying to manipulate Seina into staying with the gxp, and wasn't being strictly serious. But it still stood out. and I still hate the art syle; i might buy a bit more into the "he's so cute" if I actually thought he looked attractive, instead he looks plain at best... really It just feels like he's lacking in any attractive qualities (both on the inside and outside) and that's not good for an harem series since it just rips away my suspension of disbelief that so many women can be fonding over him. Heck one thing I liked about Tenchi Muyo is that I could actually see WHY the girls liked tenchi so much.

In the meantime, been watching more of Tenchi Muyo: War on Geminar. It starts out strong, and then gets a bit slower, but I'm thinking things pick up again; the strong beginning gives good hopes. The characters are all likeable, the humor is decent, and there is some good action. Would have been a much better choice for toonami if it was an option.
