Leaving a trail there, Gene.
Hilda is going to crouch first, right?
Only in a neighborhood like this.
How long were you waiting behind that tree?
Hmm, surprised he didn't burst into a pool of blood.
Oh, he really didn't know. Okay.
Third time asking that. Might as well ask "Is it safe?"
Crazy day today. Pirates attacking, shop destroyed...
Oh yeah, the samurai lady's back.
Don't worry. I don't think she plans to kill you.
So you don't know?
The enemy of her enemy...?
Oh, that's not good.
Now that I remember, that bleeding aspect was censored back in the day, which made that ending confusing.
I felt the same way back then.
If I remember correctly...
In any case, we need a cliffhanger to set up next week's episode, and Gene collapsing from his injuries seemed like a good one.
So next week....
Jim's actions are more innocent. He's wise to what adults do, but being a pre-teen, he lacks the interest of it. His cuddling with Melfina is like a kid cuddling with a maternal figure.
I thought that this episode was pretty good for the most part. I would have figured that they wouldn't have any money trouble for awhile after last week's episode, but I didn't factor in the cost of getting the ship prepared and keeping it somewhere while they get it ready to launch. That would make things more difficult for the group. Gene making a comment that Jim's body would sell more was disturbing, but mostly in in the notion of pedophiles paying top dollar for a child.
It seemed like they were going for a nice moment between Gene and Melfina again before they decided to make it awful. He wanted to look at her body to see just how human Melfina was apparently while she was sleeping. That was immensely creepy and took me out of the episode. I haven't been a huge fan of Gene's bit with touching women's bottoms, but at least there was a mutual attraction between him and the waitress and it did seem like she was perfectly fine with it given her happiness over seeing him again. The fact that Jim stopped him or that Melfina is supposedly an android doesn't make it any less disturbing. It's still turning a potential moment of sexual assault into a joke, which is a huge no in my book. At least when Jim was cuddling with Melfina, he said that she was like his mother. There was no sexual undertones to it and he was still acting like a child who found a maternal figure. I really hope that this doesn't happen more often with Gene because he has been generally likable and his past does show he has more emotional problems than he's letting on, but looking at someone's naked body without their content is not okay and turning it into a joke just makes it worse.
At least the action was pretty intense. I figured that Suzuka would come back, but I didn't think this quickly. She would want to be the only one to kill Gene after last week's episode, so her coming to his defense made sense. Gene was in a much tougher spot with getting hit by the enemy and being put into a corner. He was lucky enough to get out of there, but not without some damage. Suzuka seemed a lot calmer when she met with both Jim and Gene again, so her potentially joining the crew might be easier than expecting. It helps that she saved Melfina before as well. They needed a cliffhanger for the next episode with Gene passing out from his injuries, but since he's the main character and we're early on in the series, he'll be fine. Overall, the episode was pretty good for the most part.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
No one's gonna give you a map; you have to walk your own path.
--"Hot Ice" Hilda (no last name given)
It is said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Tonight...Gene Starwind's single step.
Episode 8: "Forced Departure"
Previously on Outlaw Star: The pirates are back, but Suzuka ain't gonna let them steal her mark.
Last time: Tons of pirates and no Jack Sparrow. At least Suzuka came back.
Whoooooooooo are you? Who who who who?
Hey man, nobody OWNS Melfina.
Previously on Outlaw Star, Gene could say "I was poisoned today!"
...wait, what the heck?
Oh yeah, I guess he WAS poisoned.
Well... that's unfortunate.
