The way the first four episodes of Shippuden work is that they adapt the first four chapters of Naruto part 2 in a really weird form, bouncing between the events. This is part of the reason why Satoru Nishizono, who wrote the screenplays for virtually all of the first 53 episodes, got fired.

Last time: The Bell Test (Part 2), complete with flashbacks from the first series.

This time: The conclusion. And Gaara in action.

    Meanwhile on Arrakis.

So a giant sand storm cases a giant bird... I think. What did I miss?

"How did you guess I was an intruder?"

"Umm, because you killed a bunch of my men and are wearing that blindingly obvious Akatsuki cloak?"

    Huh, deja vu.

    Man, Sand Village security sucks.

Why is everyone with deep raspy voices?

    Welcome back Digimon's Joe!

So... Naruto didn't get the bell yet. Despite me missing a whole episode.

This epic Metal Gear music is wasted on the poor pacing.

"Looks like this can take a while..."

That's an understatement of the century.

Any time you feel like using some new jutsus or something Naruto, that'd be pretty cool.

"Looks like this could take a while."

    You said it, Jiraiya.

Don't strain yourself too hard Gaara. You're only in a battle for your life.

We're watching work that someone got fired for making? Now it makes a little more sense.

The music in this segment sounds like it's trying to mimic the Dune Miniseries.

    Exploding birds. ... Okay.

What, are Owl's Kakashi one weakness?

Yeah, the way they're alternating between the bell test and Gaara, there just really is no flow to it.

Kakashi's weakness? It's so deceptively simple...

Whoa, Naruto knows but Sakura doesn't?

Kakashi just provided a hint to the ending.

    I love this typo.

So Deidara's secret weapon is more birds. Well, don't spoil us all at once.

    Kakashi hates spoilers.

    Test over.

But not this fight between Gaara and Deidara, though.

So the resolution to the bell test essentially amounts to a punchline.

And they really could have done it at any time.

And all we learned was that Sakura has super strength.

We have seven years of this, people.

    Dammit how did that happen?!

Won by a lack of spoiler alert.

Part of the reason why Shippuden goes to filler at episode 54 was because they needed to find a new permanent writer, who turned out to be Junki Takegami, who takes over writing duties at episode 72. The show improves a ton after that and a lot of that is the switch to Takegami, who is still the main writer for Shippuden even today.

But yeah. We are watching the writing of someone who was so bad at padding even Pierrot couldn't take it anymore and fired him.
