After two weeks, we return to the Past Arc (Locus of Konoha), this time focusing on Kakashi and his remembrances on checking out the trio of Genin we will know as Team 7. But before that, the focus is on the formation of an Emergency Council set to deal with the consequences of Pain's invasion and the Fifth Hokage's actions. There's going to be changes made today!

    Last time on NARUTO SHIPPUDEN
As Iruka concludes his reminiscing about his early relationship with Naruto (after rescue from a life-threatening dare, the two reaffirm their commitments as teacher and student), the news of Pain's defeat reaches far...except to Sasuke, who now decides to begin his vengeance on Konoha.
Oh, and remember when Fifth Hokage Tsunade used her considerable chakra to protect all the Leaf Villagers (alive and- temporarily- dead) from Tendo Pain's massive Almighty Push? The massive drain had left her incapacitated, and the Village without a Hokage.

Now, I understand this arc is dealing with situations that have already happened, BUT NO SPOILERS ON PLOT SITUATIONS (OR AS-YET UNREVEALED MYSTERIES) AFTER NARUTO CHAPTER 449/NARUTO SHIPPUDEN 178, ALTHOUGH BOTH MANGA AND ANIME HAVE ENDED (Such spoilers should be discussed in The Anime Forum and by Private Message). So says the Lord Hokage!

Man, I almost forgot about how much of a wuss puss the Daimyo of the Land of Fire is. Though when being chewed at by the guy who's voiced by Chief Aramaki, I guess it can't be helped.

Thankfully, 1) I'm calmed down from the garbage from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Iron Blooded Orphans; and 2) it's already a plot development that I know will get addressed.

Just a reminder that Sasuke was always a jerk.

He may come up with the Sexy Justu, but never let it be said that Naruto doesn't care how the opposite sex feels.

Episode 179 Kakashi Hatake: Jonin in Charge.
    Broadcast Date: September 22, 2010
Adapted from Naruto Chapter 450-451 (Published 2009)

    It’s the First!
This is the first appearance of the Fire Daimyo, who assembles an Emergency Council meeting to deal with the Leaf Village.

It is confirmed that Tsunade is comatose from her protection of the Leaf villagers (and temporary corpses) from Tendo Pain’s Almighty Push.

This episode begins Danzo’s reign as Sixth Hokage, after intimidating the Daimyo to elect him.

Kakashi is suggested as a possible candidate for Hokage (via Shikaku in his attempt to prevent Danzo getting the position). The suggestion of Kakashi as a contender will be referenced later.

Aside from the prologue of these aforementioned plot points, the majority of the episode is Kakashi remembering his first experience with Team 7 (in this case, spying on their activities before their first meeting.

    The Plot Thickens…
The Council quickly urge for funds and reconstruction of the ruined village, as well as a continued opposition to the Akatsuki.

The Daimyo wistfully thinks of Jiraiya, whom he would have nominated (harking back to such a decision after the death of Hiruzen). Kakashi’s sensei lineage is discussed as a support to his nomination (Kakashi-Minato-Jiraiya-Hiruzen).

Danzo argues for a stronger, more authoritative future for Konoha, arguing that the soft measures of Hiruzen and Minato had led to disasters for the village: Orochimaru and Sasuke’s departure, and the Sand invasion during the Konoha Crush. He also blames Jiraiya for teaching Nagato and Konan (that Danzo played a part in building these future disasters- betraying Yahiko, and a suspected alliance with Orochimaru in the Crush- are conveniently omitted by the man’s tirade).

Koharu blames Tsunade for allowing the Village’s destruction.

Kurenai’s recent promotion to Jonin is mentioned as she takes mentorship of Team 8.

Kakashi’s notoriety in failing his students is commented upon.

It appears Asuma’s “Who’s the King?” riddle came from Shikaku.

It appears that in the past, Homura and Koharu were against Hiruzen’s decision to team Naruto with Sasuke, as well as protesting the Nine-Tails Jinchikuri being part of a team that might have missions outside the safety of the village.

Danzo considers Hiruzen’s choice to have Sasuke as Naruto’s teammate because his Uchiha abilities could be effective against Nine Tails.

    Remember When (or Not)

Hiruzen gathers the Ninjas and announces the formation of Team 7, Team 8, and Team 10.

Much of this episode portrays the Chapter/Episode 3 activities of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura (the first kiss, Iruka assigning Team 7, Naruto kidnapping Sasuke and taking his form for an unsuccessful attempt to kiss Sakura, the emancipated Sasuke insulting Sakura over her foot-in-the-mouth comments, Kakashi and Hiruzen checking Naruto’s apartment and spoiled milk).

Kakashi remembers Obito’s scum speech and Minato’s urging for teamwork.

    Love, Family, and Relationships.
Naruto enthusiastically joins with Sakura to get water (with Sakura putting him down).

The flashback portion features Naruto’s pursuit of Sakura and Sakura’s pursuit of Sasuke.

When Naruto sees a saddened Sakura (this is after Sasuke’s put-down), he gets angry at Sasuke and picks a fight with him.

Inouchi and Shikaku are pleased over Asuma becoming their children’s mentor.

    But in the Manga…
The Anime adds Naruto and Sakura’s trip to get water, all of Kakashi’s flashback scenes (save for his canonical intro), the Shikaku- Asuma talk, and the Naruto-Sasuke fight.

The Anime adds Hiruzen assigning the three Teams, and his talk with Homura and Koharu (and Danzo eavesdropping).

This episode has Kakashi examining Naruto’s apartment and expired milk, and then spying on his students’ Chapter/Episode 3 exploits. The Manga had these exploits occur before Kakashi’s canon intro at the apartment, meaning he would not have witnessed them.

The episode has Iruka knowing about Kakashi’s student-fail notoriety at the time of the assignment of Team 7. The manga portrays him discovering his knowledge at the time of the bell-test.

The Anime adds Sakura accidentally punching Naruto off his seat in her celebration of being assigned with Saskue to Team 7.

The Anime has Naruto strong-arm Sasuke when he kidnapped him. The Manga had Naruto noose him with a rope.

The episode has Sasuke already using chakra-walking abilities, something he didn’t gain until they were in the Land of the Waves.

Sakura interrupts her two teammates by telling them to return to class; didn’t they already graduate?

The episode has Kakashi witnesses Naruto’s clone abilities during his spying on his students, where the Manga leaves him ignorant to such an experience until the bell test.

I honestly can't even remember what happened to Tsunade. I know she protected people with Katsuyu (sp?) or whatever (which was rendered completely pointless by the fact that Nagato resurrected all his victims anyway), but I don't remember Tsunade being shown fainting or otherwise becoming physically exhausted to the point that her comatose state wouldn't be a surprise for me to learn here. When was the last time they actually showed her? This show doesn't always do a good job making you remember things you should remember (which is sadly ironic considering the obscene amount of flashbacks it employs).

Well, her previous scene (Gamkichi carrying her to Sakura when Naruto begins fighting Pain) shows her mouth and hand accelerating to an old woman's (never a good sign for Tsunade; and draining her chakra to protect a population from a massive Almighty Push is a bigger deal than exhausting it while duking it out with Orochimaru back in 'The Search for Tsunade' Arc), ending with Sakura telling her mentor to rest (the background turning bright white), implying she is going to do just that.
I would disagree about her act being pointless, considering no one expected Nagato would have eventually done such a thing. More importantly, an Almighty Push that could decimate a village would have definitely crushed, mangled, obliterated, or decapitated a physical body beyond recognition. All we see in the Rinne Rebirth is the life force returning to the bodies; we don't see it restoring a lost limb or damaged body. So I don't know if the jitsu could be able to do more than repair the fatal wounds. So kudos for Tsunade and Katsuyu for making sure there were intact bodies to resurrect.
