Now let's try and be respectful of people's favourite bands, but let's also be honest: a lot of bands from 20, 30 years ago are still around, and maybe they shouldn't be. I know they still have fans, but a lot of them simply aren't anywhere near what they once were. What old bands kind of make your eyes roll when you hear they're coming to town?

None. If they wanna drops dead on stage more power to them. I can admire that.

None, really. When it comes to bands I like, I'm glad they're still around. When it comes to ones I don't, well, I don't really care either way. But whether I like them or not, I think it's great that a band can achieve that kind of longevity, that even after decades since their last hit they are still able to tour and entertain their fans and do what they love. To that I say more power to them. Let's see how many of today's newer acts are still around and popular 20, 30, even 40 years from now.

This scheme for forced retirement of rock stars reminds me of this:

Any reason for them to retire? The band sure seems to have a lot of success today.

I usually only think a band should stop when it's down to one original member. Like if said person keeps touring with a new crew. Just go solo and respect the other members.

Rascal Flatts. All their stuff sounds the same anymore, and the lead singer (Gary LeVox) is only getting fatter and fatter.

Huh. I thought The Rolling Stones was going to be the first band mentioned.

I agree with the idea that a band should retire if most of the original members are gone. At that point, it's pretty much a cover band, IMO.

Otherwise, I think bands should continue as long as they can, because they all ultimately become mostly touring acts playing for their longtime fans.

For me, it's bands that keep going after a farewell tour, with Cher and KISS coming to mind. To me it's deceptive to the fans to say you're finished and then keep going.

No way man, Stones should go on for as long as humanely possible. I want to see them in wheelchairs out there :D. At the very least they're still fun to watch. The Beach Boys on the other hand...yikes.

When I first read this I thought of guys you mentioned like the Stones who just kinda have made their impact and can't bring anything new or innovative. I love em and all but enough is enough. My suggestion is the Eagles, who I love equally but after seeing the recent documentary on them I feel better if they would retire.

Any band that starts doing the county fair circuit should be retired. Kansas, Styx, Nazareth. All bands that I grew up liking, but county fairs are probably more damaging to the image of that band than earning wages.

^ Speaking of, The Georgia Satellites are playing at a county fair north of me. The radio ads play only "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" throughout, because it's the only song of theirs anyone would recognize.

Any band that hasnt released new material in over 20 years. While its true that many fans dont care about the "new" stuff, there are also many more fans who enjoy the new stuff just as much as the classic hits. A band relying solely on their hits isnt very interesting IMO.
