Azumanga Daioh is a 26-episode anime series based on the manga created by Kiyohiko Azuma, which was first published by ADV Manga and is currently licensed in North America by Yen Press.

The series is produced by J.C.Staff and was first broadcast on Japan's TV Tokyo from April 8 to September 30, 2002. It was originally aired in five-minute segments every Monday through Friday which were subsequently combined into a half-hour episode the following Saturday. It is licensed in North America by ADV Films (now Section23 Films).

Azumanga Daioh centers around the daily lives of six unusual high school girls: Chiyo the child genius, Osaka the airhead, Tomo the wildcat idiot, Yomi the normal yet diet-obsessed girl, Kagura the jock, and Sakaki, the shy girl who secretly loves cute things. The show focuses on the routine of everyday high school life, including exams, festivals and after-school activities, but occasionally ventures into bizarre and completely random moments of humor, including Osaka's dreams of Chiyo's pigtails and the frequent appearance of "Chiyo-dad", a strange cat-like creature whom Sakaki is convinced is Chiyo's father.

The title of the series has no particular relevance or meaning--"Azuma" is the name of the comic's creator, "manga" is self-explanatory, and "Daioh" is part of the name of the magazine in Japan that published it, Dengeki Daioh.

    • Chiyo Mihama, a.k.a. "Chiyo-chan"
Voiced by: Tomoko Kaneda (JP), Jessica Boone (US)
Chiyo-chan is a child genius who moved all the way up to her first year of high school at the age of 10. Her cuteness, intelligence and sincerity win her fast friends, but her child-like persona and small stature puts her at a disadvantage with things like P.E. class and sports festivals.

    • Ayumu Kasuga, a.k.a. "Osaka"
Voiced by: Yuki Matsuoka (JP), Kira Vincent-Davis (US)
Ayumu is a transfer student from Osaka (hence the nickname) who arrived around the same time as Chiyo. Despite her moniker, she acts quite different from the typical Osakan stereotype. Her head is constantly in the clouds, and she is usually seen falling asleep in class and asking strange questions.

    • Tomo Takino
Voiced by: Chieko Higuchi (JP), Mandy Clark (US)
Tomo is a self-described wildcat girl with tons of energy and little initiative. She enjoys teasing her friends, especially Chiyo and her old grade school classmate Yomi, as well as challenging them to contests she has no chance of winning. She is very impulsive and will do things to annoy her friends without any grasp of the consequences of her actions.

    • Koyomi Mizuhara, a.k.a. "Yomi"
Voiced by: Rie Tanaka (JP), Nancy Novotny (US)
Yomi is the normal, mature girl of the group, which does not hide an occasionally mean sense of humor. She is constantly obsessed with her weight and has tried a number of diets to keep it in check, but despite this she loves food and has given in to temptation from time to time. She and Tomo have been classmates since grade school, and because of this she has developed a mean uppercut.

    • Sakaki
Voiced by: Yu Asakawa (JP), Christine Auten (US)
Sakaki has everything going for her: she's a natural athlete, she gets good grades, and her physique is the envy of all the other girls, including the diminutive Chiyo. Appearances to the contrary, she is very shy and soft-spoken, which is often misunderstood as a cool, tough attitude. She is also quite sensitive and has a secret affinity for all things cute, especially cats--though getting them to like her back is a bit of a problem.

    • Kagura
Voiced by: Houko Kuwashima (JP), Allison Sumrall (US)
An exceptional athlete and a member of the swim team, Kagura started out as a student in Miss Kurosawa's homeroom class, but transferred to Miss Yukari's class at the start of her second year (so Miss Yukari would have the advantage in the upcoming sports festival). Her energetic personality and her grades are on par with Tomo's, though she tries more to keep her impulses in check. Despite Sakaki's disinterest in sports, Kagura quickly declares a rivalry between the two of them.

    • Kaori, a.k.a. "Kaorin"
Voiced by: Sakura Nogawa (JP), Tiffany Grant (US)
Kaorin is a member of the astronomy club at school. She completely idolizes Sakaki and relishes any moment spent with her, though her feelings seem to be unrequited. She also garners the unwanted attention of Mr. Kimura.

    • Yukari Tanizaki
Voiced by: Akiko Hitamatsu (JP), Luci Christian (US)
Miss Yukari, the girls' homeroom and language teacher, acts like she just graduated yesterday. She is very immature, and her mood can change quickly from sweet and gentle to loud bursts of rage, in contrast to her old classmate and friend Miss Kurosawa. She is also an irrefutably bad driver, as evidenced by one trip in her infamous "Yukari-mobile" leaving Chiyo psychologically scarred.

    • Minamo Kurosawa, a.k.a. "Nyamo"
Voiced by: Aya Hisakawa (JP), Monica Rial (US)
Miss Kurosawa is the girls' P.E. teacher and is well-liked among the students, much to the chagrin of Miss Yukari. She tries her best to maintain her composure when Yukari gets on her nerves. The two of them have been together since high school, and "Nyamo" has stories about her from their school days which she would love to tell...if Yukari didn't have dirt on her as well.

    • Mr. Kimura
Voiced by: Koji Ishii (JP), Andy McAvin (US)
Literature teacher Mr. Kimura took his job for one reason and one reason only: because he likes high-school girls. And he's not afraid to admit it. Despite his behavior in the classroom he is a responsible and generous person outside of school, and is also married with a young daughter.
