    Animation is a storytelling medium in which still-images are shown sequentially in order to create the illusion of motion. This illusion has been attributed to the phenomena of persistence of vision, whereby an image is retained by the human eye for a short period of time after it is no longer available.

    • 1832 - Joseph Plateau invents the phenakistoscope
    • 1834 - William George Horner invents the zoetrope
    • 1906 - ''Humorous Phases of Funny Faces'' - J. Stuart Blackton; Considered the earliest animated film
    • 1911 - Little Nemo in Slumberland - Winsor McCay
    • 1914 - Gertie the Dinosour - Winsor McCay
    • 1914 - Max Fleischer invents the rotoscope
    • 1917 - Bray-Hurd Process Company is formed; Owns the combined patents for the cel animation process. Issues licenses for those interested in using them method until the patent expires.
    • 1917 - The Apostle (aka El ApĆ³stol) (First feature length animated film)
    • 1919 - The Out of the Inkwell shorts debut - The Fleischer Brothers
    • 1920 - The Debut of Thomas Cat - Bray Picture Corporation (First color cartoon)
    • 1924 - Alice in Cartoonland debuts - Disney
    • 1926 - The Adventures of Prince Achmed (aka Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed) (Earliest surviving feature length animated film)<
    • 1928 - Plane Crazy - Disney - Debut of Mickey Mouse
    • 1940 - Walt Disney is granted the patent for the multiplane camera
