Tonight, CBS aired yet another "Top 100" special; this time it was the top 100 quotes. This is the talkback for that 3-hour special.

Not surprisingly, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn" got #1. "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse" was #2, and "I coulda been a contender" was #3.

It was also cool to see where some quotes originated from, like "What......a.....dump!" Overall a good special; I was proud that I knew where most of the quotes came from, and there were only a scant few that I didn't recognize (such as "La-di-dah" from Annie Hall. Uh.... THAT deserved to be on the list?!).

AFI neglects the greatest quote from any movie...

"You met me at a very strange time in my life. "

Eh, I think they're enjoyable if you don't consider them as anything definitive or intellectual. Of course the AFI probably intends them to be, so in their intention they fail. I still find the lists like this to be a fun little novelty though.

    Eh

I'm getting the weird feeling that the AFI likes the movie "Casablanca".

A pretty average AFI list; in that it was enjoyable to watch, but not very original or containing anything besides the obvious.

I am a big fan of movie quotes and I greatly enjoyed this special. I kind of wish I would have taped it. There were some quotes I would have liked to have seen on there, but there were so many good ones it was just fun to watch. Brosnan was a great host too.

I enjoyed it a lot more than 100 Heroes & Villains.

Considering how I usually keep track of the countdown each year, I have the list of the top 100 quotes. Since this is a long list, I made a link to the list:

AFI 100 Years, 100 Movie Quotes List

As for my personal opinions on the list:

    Pros:
-Good balance between classic film lines and lines from 1980's-2000's films.

    Cons:
-A few lines probably don't fit on this list (i.e. the On Golden Pond line and the "You had me at 'hello.'" Jerry Maguire line)
-While it probably does belong on the Top 100 list, I don't think "Go ahead, make my day" is a Top 10 line.
-No "Luke, I am your father." (Come on, that line should have been on the list, as it not only provided a huge plot twist to the Star Wars saga, but it left people wondering for three years if that line was true).

There really should have been more Star War quotes.

There are a couple really awesome Return of the Joker quotes that could have easily made the list if only the majority of Americans knew it even existed.

I would be shocked that there aren't any Lion King quotes on the list, but then I remembered that it got only one entry on the Top 100 Songs list ("Hakuna Matata" at #94), so it seems the AFI doesn't like LK...

yea, here are some quotes I would have liked to see.

-"Luke, I am your father"-Star Wars: Empire strikes back
-"Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight"-Batman
    -"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe..."-Bladerunner

I'm sure I can think of others but you know, every AFI list needs changes.

    I can't remember.
I saw part of it (work + AMC's "Celebrity Charades" took up the remainder of time).

It's amazing that a number of lines were actually different from the way they're parodied:

    - "Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!" ---- Badges? We ain't got no badges! We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinking badges!

    - "Top o' the world, ma!" ---- Made it, Ma! Top of the world!

I thought it was a pretty good list.

Meh. They're quotes we've all heard of. Nothing really all too interesting, just a recognition of that what which people constantly state and remember in movies.

Maybe a better way to have done this would've been "Top 100 Most Quotable Movies". Casablanca, as excellent of a movie as it is, took up too many spots. If it had just taken up one, and then allowed them to rattle off all the classic lines, there could've been more.

And yes, of course some titles aren't going to make the list. Keep in mind that they had to narrow this down from 400, which is a tough enough task in and of itself. The whole point is to get people talking about movies (or how wrong their list was, take your pick. :p ).

I agree, especially since they showed that clip before a commercial, so it seemed like it would be up next. P.S.: The correct line is "No, I am your father". There's no Luke involved. ;)
    P.P.S.: Thanks for the list.

Was "Where we're going...we don't need roads" on the list?
