"A Garfield Christmas Special" came out in 1987 on CBS. The special's production was behind schedule, with the studio having to work around the clock in order to finish it in time. The joke at the studio was that Phil Roman (producer and director) would have to film the last scene of himself flipping the drawings to the audio. The special did get finished in time, but barely. CBS was worried about it, because "nothing really happens" in it. It's about Garfield going to Jon's family's farm and spending the Christmas. Jim Davis responded "that's the point". He didn't want to do another special where a character has to save Christmas, or learn the true meaning of the holiday. In 1991, they revised the special, reanimating scenes, removing scenes and replacing with new sequence. This is what was released on VHS and DVD, and in subsequent reruns. However, something unusual happened when Hulu put it up: Watch A Garfield Christmas Online | Hulu Somehow Hulu got the original 1987 cut and put that up. Looking at the video, the special was remastered to HD from the original film masters. My guess is the 1987 version, as is, was what was edited directly onto film, while the 1991 revision was done on videotape. When they decided to go back to the film masters, they only had the 1987 cut to work with and decided to go with that. Whatever's the case, the original version is on Hulu in good picture quality (well, goodish. The color looks dull, but it's still sharp regardless) Anyway, enjoy!
