The film opens as Jesse (Ashton Kutcher of "That 70's Show") and Chester (Seann William Scott of, yes, American Pie and Road Trip) awaken from an all-nighter they can't remember. These two dimwitted fellows seem to do a lot of "shibby," which apparently is yet another term for what us old-timers like to call grass. While not exactly a road movie, this is a tale of discovery that takes our two slow but likable heroes on a odyssey as they try and recreate the events of the night before. The burning question that hangs in the balance: Dude, where's my car?
Now, the following list of surprisingly cool bits from the film might be considered "spoilers," so consider yourself warned and skip to the next paragraph if you want to be surprised. Over the course of our heroes adventure, our shibby buddies encounter many super-cool standout moments that elevate what could have been an unwatchable film. Keep an eye out for Zoltan, "The Twins" are a mighty hip character, and then there is "Jackyl," an interesting pup whose owner sounds a lot like Barney Rubble. Interstellar Jumpsuits also get big laughs throughout the movie, and that drag racing scene with Fabio is a real. showstopper. And don't forget Jurassic Ostriches in Brent Spiner's Xandu-esque hideaway, which is one of my favorite parts! I swear I'm not making this up.
The supporting cast includes, Kristy Swanson, Jennifer Garner, Marla Sokoloff and many others. They deliver performances appropriate to the material, and technically there isn't a bad performance among them. I'm sure despite this cast and my description, you aren't completely won over. But if you shunned Dude, Where's My Car? in the theater like I did, but still enjoy this type of film, then a rental is certainly warranted. Heck, you might even want to reserve a spot for this DVD in your collection...
