This is my story. No one steal it.
I push the down button and wait for one of the elevator doors to open. I can't wait to get home. I haven't slept in days. I get weird when I haven't slept in days. But not as weird as this guy standing next to me. Boy is he weird. One of the elevators opens. I hope he doesn't follow me in, but he does. I stand all the way on the left of the elevator and he stands in the middle. I'd love to put this guy in a headlock.
The elevators in this building have been getting slower. I think it has something to do with the speed of the elevator mechanisms, but I'm not sure. Weird guy clears his throat. Stay calm. Stare straight ahead and try not to start a conversation. I hear myself say something about the elevator inspector notice. Now weird guy is talking to me. This is going worse than I thought. It would take seconds to pull my dart gun out of my briefcase. What is this guy talking about? I start wishing I was paying attention so I'd know what to say when he stops talking. He's stopped now and is looking at me. This guy is so weird. I start digging through my pockets for money to show him how rich I am, but I seem to have lost all my money. Looks like I'll be driving my car home today.
The elevator stops. It has frozen between floors. Something must be wrong with the mechanisms that make it move, but I'm not sure. Weird guy is talking more now, and hitting buttons. I wonder if he knows how close I am to taking his life. I need to go out the emergency hatch on top of the elevator and use the secrecy of the elevator shaft to change into the superhero costume in my briefcase. I can't change with him in here watching me change. I can't risk him knowing my secret. If I'm too quick in getting through that hatch, he'll suspect I am a superhero. So I take it slow. I throw my briefcase at the ceiling and it makes a loud noise. He's asking me things, but this is no time for chit-chat.
The lady with us in the elevator, who I haven't noticed until now, climbs up to the top and opens the hatch. She scrambles through and onto the top of the elevator, disappearing without a trace. I'll have to stop her later. Right now I have to worry about weird guy. I jump up and grab onto the hatch. I hang there, swinging my body back and forth. This has to be perfect. I can't do anything that will make weird guy suspicious. I kick the plant in the corner of the elevator. That should temporarily distract him.
A few hours later, the man is asleep. I swing my legs up into the shaft. My superhuman secret remains safe. I look for the woman. She has scrambled up the brick wall and climbed out onto the roof of the building. Long gone. She will be the one to destroy me someday. It is time to don my superhero costume so I can save the day and weird guy won't know it was me. But I have left my briefcase in the elevator. I stick my arm into the hatch and reach down. Not even close. I reach harder and fall into the elevator, landing on my face, bleeding more than I have ever bled in my life. Tonight I'm going to sleep the sleep of the dead.
Weird guy wakes up and starts looking at me again. There is no way I can change with him looking at me like that. I sit in the corner, where the plant used to be, and try to remember what I learned about elevators back in school. But they never taught me elevators in school. They thought this would never happen to me, but they were wrong. And they will pay for it with their lives. That plant must be long dead. All is lost.
"I'm a Green Lantern," says the man. I start to cry.
