: The Animated Series (officially known as simply "Superman") is a Warner Bros.
' TV animated series that ran from 1996 to 2000. It was the second series to take place in what would be known as the DC Animated Universe, following the smashing success of the Emmy Award-winning Batman: The Animated Series. The series was directed by Bruce Timm, one of the series producers for Batman
TAS. Much like the prior Batman cartoon, the new series was intended as a modern update on the famous superhero Superman. The cartoon has been praised by comic book and animation
fans, and is seen by some as one of the best adaptations of the Superman character.
After the series reached episode number 65 and began syndication, it was combined with episodes of Batman in what was called The New Batman/Superman Adventures. The characters of Superman and Batman were later spun off into a new animated series, Justice League, which featured other popular DC characters as well.
Superman TAS follows the life and adventures of Clark Kent from the very beginning, starting with the classic Superman origin story. The Kryptonian Kal-El is sent away from his doomed home planet of Krypton to Earth on a rocket by his father, Jor-El. He arrives in midwestern America, where he is adopted by the Kent family as "Clark" and is raised as their own son. In time, Clark learns to use his powers responsibly and becomes a superhero in the city of Metropolis while using his job as a reporter for the Daily Planet as a cover. It is there that meets the mainstay characters of star reporter Lois Lane and photographer Jimmy Olsen, who often interact with both Clark and Superman.
Throughout the series' run, Superman takes on many villains from his substantial rogue's gallery. The most prominent of these is his classic nemesis, the corrupt business tycoon Lex Luthor, who perpetrates crime and nefarious plans while using his cunning and wealth as a cover for his activities. Other major villains include the super intelligent, self-perpetuating android and supercomputer Brainaic, as well as the intergalactic tyrant Darkseid. Other recurring villains include Metallo, The Parasite, Toyman, Livewire, and Bizarro.
The series also teamed up Superman with other superheroes. Perhaps most notably, Superman works with Batman against Lex Luthor and The Joker in the three-part adventure The World's Finest in what would be the first meeting of the two iconic superheroes in the DCAU. Other superhero cameos include The Flash (against Weather Wizard), Kyle Rayner as the Green Lantern (against Sinestro), Doctor Fate, Aquaman, Maxima, Steel (aka John Henry Irons), and Supergirl.
