Disney to Produce Anime (Yes, You Read That Right!)

This is definitely worthy of a mirrored thread since it involves both anime companies and Disney. I imagine that this news may be with some heavy skepticism over Disney's plans to produce original content for the Japanese market, instead of localizing already existing content. Two more anime companies, Madhouse Co. and Jinni's Animation Studios were announced as producing content for Disney, in addition to a previous Toei Animation/Disney co-production announcement in 2006. According to Yahoo News, the Lilo & Stitch TV series will be redone for the Japanese market, with a setting in Okinawa instead of Hawaii this time and Lilo replaced by a new character "Hanako."

Does anyone else find it ironic that Disney inherited the rights to a well-known Japanese series of shows (the Super Sentai series), and changed it for American, European, and other audiences as "Power Rangers" and yet now they're trying to do the exact opposite with "Lilo & Stitch" for Japan? For fans of Lilo & Stitch, I get the feeling this may be their initial reaction to this news:

Quote:
Nooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
This part at the end of the Yahoo News article:

Quote:
The company said that it has produced TV series and films in other countries, denying reports this was the first time Disney has gone offshore with the core production processes for major programs.
was in response to earlier reports such as the one at Forbes:

Quote:
It would also be the first time that Walt Disney will have moved core production for a program outside of the United States, as it seeks to tap into Japan’s deep pool of animation talent and advanced computer graphics technology.
A little of bit of recent Jetix history clearly shows that W.I.T.C.H. was an Italian comic made into a TV series by French company SIP Animation, and the entire filming of the Power Rangers TV show has been in New Zealand for the past five years. Speaking of that, I wish Disney would announce what they're going to dp with PR after this year, since it's been so wildly speculated that an animated show was in development. Now seems like the time of year they would announce such a project for next season. like W.I.T.C.H. was announced as a mid-season show back in early 2004.

So Lilo and Stitch(Hanako and Stitch) will be turn into an anime? Interesting. I just hope they don't turn Stich into a Pokemon or something like that.

I wonder if Kim Possible, Emperor New School, and classic toons like Mickey Mouse will also follow if succesful?

Wasn't the Lilo and Stitch tv series already similar to Pokemon with Lilo and Stitch having to find and catch all the alien experiments? Also, a Mickey Mouse anime doesn't sound bad if they keep the character designs and personalities intact.

I think it's interesting that Disney wants to produce original content for the Japanese market {though not exactly surprising, considering how popular Disney is in Japan....I mean, they have a Disneyland in Tokyo, and look at the Kingdom Hearts video game series....they made special editions of all three games exclusive to Japan, and they're making three more games}....
I never was a big fan of the Lilo and Stitch TV series...it just never held my interest that well {I do love the original film and the movie sequels aren't bad,though}...about the only things that would interest me at the moment were if they were producing more Gargoyles animation,or if they decided to make a Kingdom Hearts series...

I don't understand why the OP is so surprised. American companies working on Japanese shows isn't anything new at all.

I was going to say, with all the dealings Disney has had with Japanese studios in the past, this really isn't much of a surprise to me.

Can't wait to hear what Lord Galactus has to say.

I would say this. If they can get together with Enix, they could pretty much produce a Kingdom Hearts series. I'd like to see that, actually.

And all this time, I thought they were going to produce dubs of animes. Considering the poor releases of the Studio Ghibli films, I was about to scream.

If it's not KH, it'll be original material. Watch.

Oh yeah...forgot about Kingdom Hearts.

Lilo and Stitch wore out as the series moved on, it could use some sort of revamp, but that probably won't last long either.

The Ghibli films came to my mind first though. If Disney is getting serious about anime you'd think they'd target the shojo brand. Or some kind of shojo/ teen/ action genre.

Release the Lizzie McGuire Commandos!

Why doesn't Disney create a series based on Kingdom Hearts? Heck, I'd watch that.

Edited to say: oops, sorry, that idea's already been brought up here. Just the same, I think it's a GREAT idea. In fact Disney ought to make a movie based on KH. I think that if it were any good it'd be hugely successful, truly an all-ages hit.

Couldn't help myself. But yeah, if they were tapping into that market, they'd go shojou. They're close to that anyway with that Princess Manga I've seen.

If this *Not Lilo* and Stitch project works, odds are Kingdom Hearts will be done at some point, as long as they can work an arrangement with Square.

Forget about Tarzan being there, though...

Disney, where is Only Yesterday? I know it's got some child abuse (kind of) and some panty/periods talk, but come on now.

Even though people have said Kingdom Hearts being adapted, I can now see it coming into fruition now. The only downside is that "Spectrobes" might get an adaptation.

Though I am interested in seeing the "Lilo and Stitch" remake since, Stitch is currently my favorite Disney character, and I want to see how the new girl would be similar to Lilo

I find the idea of an Anime version of Lilo & Stitch very fascinating to be honest. Can't waitn to see it on YouTube.
