Anime of the Month (March '06) - Hare+Guu

The votes have spoken, and this month's Anime of the Month selection is the highly anticipated Hare+Guu from AN Entertainment and distributed by FUNimation. Here's a brief synopsis of the series:

http://http://www.animenewsnetwork.c...es.php?id=5514
Quote:

Ten year old Haré enjoys a peaceful life of school, video games, and households chores until his mother adopts an orphan girl named Guu, a girl who's not exactly what she seems. The insidious Guu turns poor Haré's life inside out when she reveals that she's actually a pan-dimensional, mind-reading, magic using monster with a sarcastic wit, an unlimited appetite, and a taste for driving Haré insane! Fluff up your chest hair, hide your elephants, and prepare yourself for more comic insanity that you ever imagined could fit in a single DVD.
Volume 1 is available right now. As always, any discussion of the series pertaining to events beyond Volume 1 should be placed in spoiler tags.

You may now discuss the series.

Guu doesn't really have anything to spoil.

Well, yeah it does, little things, yes, but there are spoilers.

Great dub has this series. The outtakes are funny. I could have gone without some literral (and some purposefully non-literal) naming translations.

Actually, as Conekiller pointed out, the show does have a few spoilers that pertain to
Spoiler:
the prologue shot that is shown at the start of episode 1.

The fact that you already know what the show is promising from the get-go... that's the first episode in a heartbeat. I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be... the only episode on the DVD that I have positive feelings for is Episode 4, and only then did the insanity actually start to set in.

I'd say more, but I'm saving up for the review I'm writing on my website. I may get the next volume, but I'm not sure... if it's more like Episodes 1 & 2 than Episode 4, then I'm walking away.

And I still have no clue what I'm going to do with that chest hairpiece.

Going back and re-watching the series, I agree. Epsiode 4 is the standard the rest of the series follows (with some plot and emotional stuff much later) Alot of the comedy comes form the quirky characters and how they play off each other (IE the sleeping teacher, laughing Wadi, Hare's hyper-paranoia) once those things are set up, they let the characters run wild!

Personally, I agree that the first two episodes of Guu are weak compared to the rest of the show. However, while most people feel that the show finally picks up around episode 4, I personally felt the show begins to show it's true comical side was in episode 3 (aka the "Afro Guu" episode).

I watched the first episode last night on one of the Newtype DVD inserts and was definitely weirded out. But at the same time, my interest was piqued. It was just quirky enough that it weirded me out, yet didn't drive me away. How long is this series?

And just so everyone knows what they're getting into with waits inbetween volumes, Hare+Guu isn't expected to finish on DVD until early 2007. So you're in for a long haul.
