Dragon Ball DVDs: What the heck.

Funimation, what the hell.

I think Dragonball Z has been released on DVD in at least 3 different forms in the last five years.

And now we've got the friggin Dragon Box coming down the pipeline.

Exactly how many times are they going to remaster, release, and cut these up for pete's sake?

I'm not entirely a fan of DBZ but I'd love to pick up the original Dragon Ball series on DVD. But I'm afraid in 6 months Funimation is going to release the ultimate super-duper special uncut edition mark III.

Dragon Box >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Every other release thus far.

This newest release isn't just any remastering, it's the OFFICIAL remastering from Japan. It's being brought over here for fans of the original language and not really for the dub audience (but there IS going to be a dub track with the original music), but it'll be worth it just for the great video and audio quality.

AND IT'S NOT IN WIDESCREEN.

Sure, we'll might get something else down the line (*cough*Kai*cough*), but it won't be any more definitive than the Dragon Box.

Edit: Oh wait, you're worrying about the original Dragon Ball...

...Yeah, we don't know yet if they'll do a US Dragon Box release of that yet, so I don't know what to tell you. Definitely won't be in six months, though, since it was nearly 3 years between the start of the Z sets and these Dragon Boxes.

The first picture oyu meantione di shte original dub made by ocean group and distrbute by pioneer when funimation first made dragonball z, the second was them redoign the first 67 episodes uncut like the rest of the series was prior to that ie form captain ginyu onwards was uncut. the 3rd was there attempt to remaster the oriignal video into hd and give it a new audio, however they stupidly decided to make it widescren which annoyed alot of people, the last one is there attempts ot fix the widescren issue byu releasing the dragonbox from japan. as for dragonball i think it getting a remastered released anad maybe dragonbox release. at the end o fhte day db is funimaiton milk cow and they will milk it as much as possible as they have nothing else apart form one piece that cna bring tham loads of money

The Dragon Box is made from Japan and remastered from Japan. Nuff said.

I was never bothered by the wide screen the "orangebricks" had. I just found FUNimation's choices for cover art odd most of the time.

Why are there so many Dragon Ball Z releases?

Capitalism, my friend. I'm not saying Funi is greedy, I'm just saying they do what everyone else with a hot property does. Just look at what WB did with the Batman movies.

I guarentee if you had your hands on a franchise, you'd milk it

Yay for profit

FUNimation knows their markets. They make really smart business moves and that's why they're the current industry leader. Dragon Ball Z has been a test for a lot of stuff and it's all worked out. I'm glad for it too because they've used that to their advantage. Dragon Box can be seen as a sort of apology to the hardcore fans. Like, "Hey we're sorry we messed with your favorite cartoon. Here, this is for you, it was expensive. Buy it if you want."

Anyway, today there are only two releases worth noting. Everything else is out of print and obsolete... If you want to know what to get, look at it like this.

"Do I want the best possible video with frame-by-frame restoration and jitter reduction, and do I have a little extra cash to spend?"
The Dragon Box is for you.

"Do I want some decent looking video with an occasional distracting artifact, and am I on a budget?"
The Season Sets are for you.

The season sets also have the US broadcast audio track, with music that was composed for the TV edit of the show, and the original Japanese soundtrack. The Dragon Boxes have only the original Japanese music.

I'm actually amazed that Toei capitulated on the matter this quickly.

If Toei hadn't denied Funi access to the Dragon Box remasters for the season sets, this wouldn't be necessary.

Cool

There has been the original OceanDub version, the original FUNimation version, The Ultimate Uncut version for FUNi to redub the episodes they had not yet done (and should be seen as part of the original run). The Ultimate Uncut versions were left incomplete and were replaced with the Digitally Remastered Boxsets.

And that'll be all to the DVD/VHS releases. The Japanese Versions obviously get a different branding.

There's still the Dragon Box though. If the Z sets sell well enough, the rest of the franchise will likely have their sets brought over, hopefully.

So the home video release of Dragon Ball is far from finished.

Yeah, the Dragon Box will put all of FUNimation's releases so far to shame. It contains the original and proper aspect ratio of the series (4:3, i.e. fullscreen) and the remastering was done carefully, frame-by-frame, from the original 16mm print (the first prints of the film made and immediately frozen to preserve). No longer will fans have to put up with that awful 'remastered' footage from the Orange Bricks.

Anyhow, Mike (VegettoEX) wrote an excellent article on the history of Dragon Ball home video releases by FUNimation. You can find it here: http://www.daizex.com/general/feature/

You guys gotta tell me about these sorts of threads. I never check this forum.

A guy on Daizex's forum has it. I believe it covers 32-61 or so (not sure myself).

DragonBox is in Japan. Care about what's in your region.
