Toon Zone Talkback - "Snow White" Diamond Edition: Still One of the Fairest After 70 Years

This is the talkback thread for "Snow White" Diamond Edition: Still One of the Fairest After 70 Years.

May be the first time a DVD has felt like it had too many special features. Took me forever to get through them all.

Loved the review, I like that you balanced the praise that Snow White richly deserves with the ways that the film shows its age in some respects (characterization, techniques that Disney dropped later, etc). It's positive but objective. I'm also more confident than ever about the extras and the quality now, so I've got the Blu-Ray on order now. Looking forward to it.

Speaking of looking forward to things, I think I noticed someplace that Beauty and the Beast will get this treatment eventually...good lord, yes please.

Haven't seen Ultimate Matrix, I take it? And anyway, the large amount of stuff here is justified. It was Disney's first feature length movie and the first in general. The only way I could see there being a problem is if the various docs repeat info and appear redundant, only there to pad the disc and scream, "Look how much stuff we have!"

There is a trailer for a Diamond Edition of Beauty and the Beast on this disc. It's in high-def, too, and it looks stunning. The next movie out is supposed to be Dumbo, but BatB is definitely on the way. Latest thing I can find says Fall 2010 and I think that's what they say on the trailer, too.

Oh, definitely. One thing that I was really surprised at was how little material gets repeated on this set and how watchable it all is.

And think about it - in 30 years, this movie'll be at it's hundreth anniversary, and Disney will have to find a way to out-do this.

I mean, y'know, if the world doesn't blow up.

I wonder if I should check this out. I have the 2001 release DVD, but I don't know what happened to it.

Limited, platinum, gold, silver, bronze, diamond. Ruby, emerald, quartz, granite, obsidion...

This was one of my favorite Disney movies when I was younger. I'll have to re-watch it sometime soon; can't remember all of those little details at the moment.

Great review, by the way. I loved the historic bit and the review of the movie itself. Ya kinda lost me with all the 5.1 Spanish 7.1 English DTS-HD, though. (Y'know, too many special features is never a bad thing. Well, I guess it isn't great when you have to watch them all in one sitting and review all of them, but it's good in all other ways.)

I would love to see that 17-minute documentary.

OK, Beauty and the Beast Diamond Edition trailer just says it's "Coming Soon." No date. Suppose it depends on your timescale what "Soon" should mean.

Heh.

Short version: the numbers are counting speakers that will be used in your sound system and the words describe how extra special the sound itself is. 2.0 is just flat stereo -- right and left channels. 5.1 means 5 speakers (left and right in front and back, plus the center speaker) plus a subwoofer for the low-end. 7.1 means 7 speakers plus a subwoofer (add 2 more rear speakers). For the rest, DTS is "better" than Dolby Digital, and HD sound is better than not-HD.

Despite being in high-def video, lots of Blu-rays still use 5.1 sound, although 5.1 HD is supposed to be better than "normal" 5.1 (though I'm not sure I can tell on my hardware, since my receiver is pretty old). The fact that Disney re-splurged for a 7.1 DTS-HD mix means they made the sound as high-quality as they could make it, which is another data point suggesting to me that they either have to sell a bajillion of these things to make any money or they sell them at a loss specifically because they're as much about perpetuating the legends of the Disney brand name as they are about cool movies.
