I'm sick of this "G Gundam is not really Gundam" thing

Okay, this is like the third time. My best friend, who is very sensible and not ******-ish when it comes to anime, consistently says that G was not a real Gundam series. "All it was was GaoGaiGar and replaced with a Gundam instead" as he says. Now I can take apart that one sentence alone and say everything wrong with it but I just don't understand. Why is this so hard? If it has the show is called Gundam and is considered Gundam by the production staff and all major retailers and toymakers, it's a freaking Gundam series. What more do they want?

Is different bad now or something? Is it just because it spent more times on cool fights than philisophical talks on war? It's ridiculous in my opinion.

(OT, but he also said he thinks One Piece wasn't as good as Bleach which nearly ended our friendship right there. )

Well he was right on one thing anyway*Bleach > One Piece > Naruto*

As for G Gundam, i still consider it a GUNDAM show, hell, RX-78 gets a cameo its gotta be a REAL GUNDAM show

Plus a change of pace is never bad, i havn't seen Gundam X but i hear its different as well, does he consider it Gundam?

It's personally my favorite Gundam series simply because it is so different.

Also...I really don't see the similarities to GaoGaiGar. While they both follow an enemy of the day formula and are hotblooded to the max, I really don't see what they really have in common. GaoGaiGar more goes by the Gary Anderson "super vehicle organization", protecting a city from various monsters using powerful technology. G Gundam is more of a "wondering the Earth fighting tournament", like many an 80s shonen series.

I've actually seen many fans who love G Gundam because it's cheesy and it delights in being cheesy. I myself think this way too. In fact, it's the only Gundam series I really like! I agree with what you say; brutal wars and philosophical musing gets real old in shows about giant mechas. I liked G Gundam because it didn't take itself too seriously and had fun with the concept of giant fighting robots.

Plus, no other Gundam series but it had the epicness of SUPER ASIA!!!!

Lol, NO. It's *One Piece >Naruto >Bleach.* All three of those series' are flawed, but that's how it is.

Yes, because everything except G is a Real Robot series apparently.

No, if it was merely disliking the same the same thing I do, that would be fine, I'm respectful of opinion.

It's more of the fact that people deny a clear fact that G Gundam is in fact, a part of the Gundam franchise and I can't seem to understand why. This may or may not lead into people disliking it for that reason but the main thing is why people do not seem to understand that G Gundam...is a Gundam series even if it is a Super Robot one.

Same here. Kinda. Well, out of all Gundam shows I seen, G Gundam ranks number 2 out of 10 in my mecha list.

Personally, I find G Gundam as a fun mecha show. I can just enjoy the show without having way to much drama.

You know, even though they're completely different series, if you liked G Gundam and Gurren Lagaan, you should really check out GaoGaiGar.

Anyway, I dunno. Maybe it was just the whole "It's Super Robot not Real Robot thing." Personally I'd say G is to Gundam as Hibiki was to Kamen Rider.....okay, maybe like 5 people here know what that is.

Well, Gundam is about character and people understanding each other. As I recollect, G Gundam did that, subsituting the usual 'realism' for over the top, less than 'Gundam' elements.

I dislike when people say G Gundam isntreally a Gundam show because it literaly makes no sense no matter what argument you use to try to make that point. IT HAS GUNDAMS IN IT!!!, that makes it a Gundam show no matter what the plot or the characters are like.

Try getting your friend to read my thread. I don't know that I really have much more to say than what's in there just now.

There's something to be said for appreciating the past and upholding the integrity of original works, but a reflexive anti-innovation attitude is something that's too easy to adopt when you have a "purist" mindset. Classic Gundam was itself a completely alien creation compared to the other series of its time in 1979. I'm certainly glad it wasn't completely rejected since it wasn't a "real giant robot show."

I don't have a problem with G Gundam existing and its a gundam show but I still don't like it.
