Rob Liefeld and the Man In The Yellow Hat

In a nutshell some fanboy demanded an apology from Liefeld at Wizard World for his run on Captain America. Then he left "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" with an obnoxious note. And he decided to document it for all the world to see.

I am not a fan of Liefeld. I think his art is overrated and there is overwhelming evidence that indicates that he strongly relies on his peers for inspiration. In fact in the comic book world you either love or hate Liefeld. And from what I have seen it is mostly hate.

I think all of us can agree we have all felt "fanboy rage" when a comic goes into a direction that we dislike.

However, I strongly disagree with this fan's actions. So you dislike their work. Fine. But to take it to this level is just downright rude. If you want to be critical of somone's work, fine. But there is a proper way to address those issue without being a jerk.

What is ironic is that this whole situation has made Liefeld a more sympathetic character and has made Coons a pariah.

Seriously, this fanboy is a d-bag.

Liefeld hate is overblown, anyway, at least hate for him as an artist. Sure, his anatomy isn't precise but in that way he's in the company of a lot of older comic book guys, where it was more about the raw power of the image than the technical mastery.

People that think he's the first guy to draw a character that isn't anatomically realistic and is in crazy exaggerated perspective need to flip through some old Kirby stories sometime.

I think that's who Liefeld is emulating most, anyway, his drawings seem to be a conscious effort to capture the power of a Kirby image. I don't think he lives up to it because his drawings lack discipline, but you can see what his intent is. And Liefeld can actually look rather nice with a good inker, like his Hawk and Dove run with Karl Kesel.

Anyway, he's doing his thing and if you like it, fine. If you don't don't buy it.

Okay, so now I've defended Michael Vick and Rob Liefeld in the last few days so I might as well make it a thee-fer. Anyone want to say something mean about Heidi and Spencer?

I don't like Liefeld's art and I think his comments about Shatterstar recently are the height of arrogance, but that Yellow Hat guy was just plain rude.

Liefeld was there, out of his own time and effort, to meet and talk to his fans. Even with my problems with his art I wouldn't go up to him and demand an apology for a 13 year old comic he was hired to draw, then buy an art book shove it in his face and run like the clappers. I'd be surprised if this was the first time this sort of thong happened to him, so the fact that Liefeld still goes to conventions shows he's a much bigger man than that Yellow guy.

It was just rude, insulting, and sets comic fans in a bad light.

What a loser. I'm not a fan of Rob's either but that's just a dumb thing to do and anyone who thinks this yellow hat guy is awesome is a loser too.

Agreed.

I only discovered Rob Liefeld through his work with Image when it first launched. I was never really a fan of his stuff, though I never had a problem with his style; I just liked other Image titles more. I never really understood all the hate for the guy. Seriously, demanding an apology for a comic book over ten years old? These d-bag haters just need to get over themselves and move on.

A comic book that, along the lines of what W.C. Reaf pointed out, Marvel actively courted Liefeld to draw, interrupted and derailed a great Mark Waid run for and hyped like crazy. He did a job, he didn't commit some kind of crime against the character.

It was a pretty terrible book and this kind of stuff is fun to joke around about, but this yellow hat guy is taking it way too seriously with his demand for an apology.

Let's be honest, the only reason the guy did this is for internet "cred", so the sooner everyone ignores him, the sooner he goes away. This guy is as big of a [jerk] as that one guy who threw water on Tom Cruise at a movie premiere. I was also at that convention, and never saw Leifeld at his booth the whole weekend, so he must of been really, really ticked and decided to leave based on that.
