Opposite Day

I'm afraid I'm going to have to tell you exactly that. As far as I know, none of the writers were aware of the Spongebob "Opposite Day" episode. We were simply trying to be juvenile. The original version of that scene had Wooldoor simply telling the others about the brain tumor. We were looking for a joke to twist it a little and someone pitched opposite day (which, by the way, the network hated -- they thought it skewed too young and made Drawn Together seem like a kid's show).

There was a scene which was cut for time (and also because we thought it didn't come out all that funny) which came between the big bang and the boob people wherein Captain Hero was pushing a proto sea creature out of the ocean and onto land to help speed up evolution because he was getting bored. That may have helped explain Captain Hero's hand in evolution, but, in the end, we didn't think it was necessary.

That scene was completely animated but the network wouldn't let us air it. They thought it was too harsh (although it really wasn't). In the scene, Hero climbs on a horse. The horse rears up and Captain Hero gently slides off the horse and directly into the wheel chair.

After we lost the use of that shot, we tried to have the sound of a horse winnie inside The Pillow Fort of Isolation while Hero was giving up his powers. The network nixed that as well. However, there is the sound of a Horse winne over the "Double Hemm" production logo at the end of the episode.

That was really the point of doing the episode. Don't sweep this stuff under the rug. Talk about it. Keep it out in the open. Question it. Never Forget.

By the way, "the Black guy in the car" was named Malcom Xposition because he baldly filled in a lot of the blanks at that pont in the story. We were planning to put his name on screen but we stopped doing that stuff after the first season. So no one but you guys know his real name.

Bill,

Question: will this episode be re-done in an uncensored version when it comes out on DVD as part of the Season 2 set?

Wow. That's it? I thought it'd be a bit more graphic (the horse would actually be a bit violent and then Hero will fall down, break his neck, in a rather gruesome fashion).

Blowing Your Nose With Racial Issues

Yeah, especially the black guy who said that people are just as racist now, but they pretend they're not. What Spanky said about the racial stereotypes in old cartoons is what everyone who's against censoring the classic cartoons for racial and ethnic characters says about it, including me.

Quote:
For some reason Mickey being the leader was disturbing, considering that most disney cartoons had a racial facial expression according to the Encyclopedia on this website, and disturbing overtones in it's movies.
Yeah. Disney cartoons have racial and ethnic stereotypes in them just like the toons from WB, MGM, and others. If the leader were some uptight censor in a nice suit or a soccer mom-type who's not a very good parent, then I'd believe it.

Quote:
What Superman Movie did the ending trick come from anyway?
I think Superman 3 had the trick where Superman revolves the world backwards in order to save Lois Lane from a car accident.

Quote:
Does anyone find it ironic that they talked about a vault where censored cartoons are hidden away in an episode that wasn't allowed to air for a year?
Ironic isn't the word for it. Appropriate is more like it.

That's it. We wanted it to be funny, not gruesome.

I loved the episode, although the "NOOOOOOO!"s got a little old. The stereotypes were perfectly done though, and as a Speedy Gonzales fan, I loved those references. Wooldoor being psychotic was funny as well.

Everything that can be said about this episode pretty much has (and more- "Malcolm Xposition," now that's clever!) so I'll just quote one of the funniest lines (at least for me):

"Mah feets! Dey failin' me now!"

A question for Bill:

Since this was a held over episode from S1, why was it not included on the S1 DVD set? And thusly, will it be included on the S2 DVD set?

It will be on the season 2 DVD. The degree of re-editing will depend on things which can't even be predicted at this point. I would hope that the horse scene will be restored, but who knows whether or not Comedy Central will stop digging their heels in over something so minor?

1) Of the eight DT housemates, who was the first character created, and who was the last? (By the show's creators, not in the fictional DT world - that would be Toot and probably Spanky, I'm guessing.)

2) Were there any ideas for housemates that didn't make the cut, or were rejected for some reason?
The project evolved in a manner that makes it difficult to answer either of these questions. The characters were basically created all at once. Meaning that from the beginning the creators knew there'd be a super hero, a disney character, a kid's show character, a video game character, etc. Also, there were specific reality show types that the creators wanted to include. Then it was just mix and match.

Then the characters are adjusted and readjusted. In early versions, Wooldoor was a manic depressive drug addict, Clara had blonde hair, Captain Hero was a 1970s super hero instead of a 1990s super hero. For a short while Clara and Xandir were going to be "Ross and Rachel". Once voice actors are cast the characters change again. The characters evolve constantly. It's not as cut and dried as "this one came first, this one came second."

Hope that helps.

Bill

Because it didn't air during season one. When it looked as though the episode would never ever air on Comedy Central there was talk that it would included as a bonus feature on the season one dvd. But once Comedy Central agreed to air it, it was considered a season two show. It will be on the season two dvd with the other season two shows.

It's not uncommon to hold over shows. Every year The Simpsons holds over episodes from one season to the next. Those episodes are considered to be from the season they aired, not the season they were produced.

One last comment to Bill:

Whoever thought up the "Empire Strikes Back" parody of M. Mouse as Vader...

Sheer brilliance.

Pretty good episode, although next week's looks to be even funnier.
