Who is...The DCAU Red Hood?
We never did find out who this mysterious Red Hood was, the Red Hood that graced the pages of the short-lived Batman Adventures Vol. 2 series. For a host of issues, we saw him toil in the the background. He barked orders at Phantasm and Black Mask, ordering them to do his bidding. The best look we got of him was one simple panel.
And that was it. Only a few months later the title came to an end, leaving this plot thread to dangle on. Writers Dan Slott and Ty Templeton both refused to reveal the identity of the character, only saying that the character's identity would only work in the animated DC Universe, and would be nothing any mainstream counterpart version. Not a lot to go on, is it? No, but it is enough to create some educated guessing and speculation. And perhaps some comics writers could stop in, maybe drop some hints or help fill the gaps on one of the biggest mysteries of the animated DC Universe to never to be answered. So...Who the The Red Hood?

Does the man under the mask have any connection with the Joker, the most famous Red Hood? (I'm pretty sure it's not Joker, but perhaps there's a Joker connection.) I don't think Slott and Templeton will ever get a chance to complete the storyline, so I wish they'd just tell us, or at least leave a riddle.

Who's to say that it's a character that has already been established in the animated universe? It could actually be an original.
Outside of that, really, it could be anyone, as we've no real clues to go on at all at this point. -Tim

That run was on it's way to being one of the all time great runs on a Batman title. I will never forgive DC for cancelling it. Just for the record, I have no problem whatsoever with The Batman Strikes.
Anyway, I think the Red Hood is Alfred. The reason why he started using the cane was to increase his aura of senility, in order to divert attention from his secret life. Just take a look at where the Red Hood is sitting. Doesn't it look like the Batcave? |

If I recall correctly, that setup was on an airplane in flight. It's not the Batcave.

Speaking as someone who has interviewed Slott several times and often brought this up... I have absoloutly no idea. I did learn however, that it wasn't Two-Face.
Slott's next arc (if you remember, he and Templeton switched every 4 or so issues) was to be an arc featuring a few of the rouge's gallery and the main beginning of what was described as a "Hobgoblin" like mystery as to who was behind the hood, running into #40 or so. So all in all... I've no idea who the hell it was.

Why would they still keep it a mystery even after it's been cancelled for a year.

Well...
Here's the thing. I know who the Red Hood was, naturally, since I was working on the issues that featured him. HOWEVER, the decision as to who was under there was Dan's not mine. We often shotgunned ideas, and sometimes just called each other up with ideas, but the basic Red Hood storyline was 90% Dan's (just as the Penguin as Mayor bit, or the reformed Riddler bits were mine), and it's not for me to reveal the identity if Dan hasn't done so in public. He's often said he plans to use the storyline in a JLAnimated comic someday, which he still might (although his exclusive contract with Marvel, and my contracts with Bongo and Mr. Comics seem to have us working elsewhere than DC at the moment.) I will give you some hints though.... It's a character that belongs exclusively to the DC animated world...who wouldn't work in any other version of the continuity, and it's absolutely NOT Jason Todd or Alfred. Sorry, but you'll have to pester Dan about the final identity, since it wasn't my bit. Ty the Guy. |

Rupert Thorne and Lock-Up are characters in the comics. Keep in mind that he said 'DC', not 'Batman'; don't limit yourself to Batman characters.

Okay, so, we have 2 clues: It's a character that was introduced in BTAS who wasn't previously in the comics, and it only works in the DCAU.
Those 2 clues shouldn't be pushed together. They are distinct. For example, while, say, Harley Quinn was introduced in BTAS, the fact that she's been grafted into the mainline continuity means that it could be possible in the comics. The second clue is more important than the first. It has to hinge specifically upon events in the DCAU. Things that aren't grafted into any other continuity. The picture indicates Red hood definatly has the build of a man, and an elderly man at that. All taken together, along with the references to Andrea Beaumont in those later issues, it does seem to indicate a Mask of the Phantasm connection. However, I think Arthur Reeves is barking up the wrong tree. Reeves was a worm, he sold people out, he wasn't the type to take this kind of command. But someone who wants revenge? Someone who "orders" the Phantasm around? Well, if I were to venture a guess, I'd think it was Andrea's father. An elderly man, with a connection to both the Phantasm, (who he was commanding,) and to Joker, (The most famous red hood, and the man who killed him.) Yes, there is the whole "him being dead" thing, but since when are amazing ressurections a rarity in comics? (If I'm not mistaken, the most recent comics Red Hood is a resurrected Jason Todd.) To me, he best satisfies all the clues and conditions: A character introduced in BTAS, with a situation that only the DCAU can accomodate, having a connection to Phantasm and Joker, and fitting the physical build and age of the red hood, All the while not being an obvious choice or give-away.

It's really quite obvious...
