Here's another site that seems to confirm it.
Cartoons aren't "just for kids"...but they're not just for adults either. They're for everyone.

John was the best as Mr. Slate- he was very underrated, too. I can see people like Tom Kane, Rob Paulsen, Maurice LaMarche, Jim Cummings and others succeeding John Stephenson in his various voice-over roles. In addition to being a signature voice at both Hanna-Barbea and Ruby-Spears, John also did voice-overs for DePatie-Freleng, Rankin-Bass, DiC(Cookie Jar Entertainment), Marvel Films, Disney and Warner Bros. John lived a long life and set the stage for current voice-over artists to eventually succeed him in the roles he's portrayed, and we, as fans, can't thank him enough for playing those roles. Right now, among the current voice-over artists, in my opinion, probably the one man who's closest to sounding similar to John Stephenson would have to be Tom Kane. We can tell John thanks for the memories- our current crop of voice-over artists, some of which have learned from John, can now pick up where he left off. He'll always be one of the best.
Like it or not, I never apologize for being a fan of whomever they may be.

In the words of Sammo Hung: "Why were we not informed earlier?"

Well, either way. That's very sad news.

Grandma: No. Heavens to betsy, child. Why would you think such a thing? Just because my chili gravy won a blue ribbon at the county fair and yours didn't even place. Who am I to tell you how to make sausage gravy? The Green County gravy champion, that's who.

He also did some live-action work, guesting a few times on Hogan's Heroes, and did some narration on Dragnet, usually at the end of the show during the 1967 season. One of the last of Hanna-Barbera's Golden Age voices will be missed.

He was one of my favorite voices in old cartoons. It's strange that we only hear about this now.

He was one of my favorite voice actors, particularly as Mr. Slate. I also pictured him voicing the principal in "Calvin and Hobbes":

John Stephenson also voiced Chief Quimby in the original pilot episode of "Inspector Gadget," along with the Winter Olympics announcer (other alternate voices included Mona Marshall as Penny, and even Gary Owens as Inspector Gadget on one version!)

Aside from those, no search result gives me a death notice. Did a google for "John Stephenson death" and got a December 6th, 1994, but for another John. So from the looks of it, the one in talks is alive

Okay, since he's clearly not dead, I'm locking this.
