Happy 40th Anniversary to The Superfriends' premiere on ABC-TV Saturday morning
It's now September 8, 2013, and on this date in 1973, The Superfriends, a Hanna-Barbera animated adventure program for television, based on D.C. Comics' Justice League of America comic book series, premieres on ABC-TV as part of its Saturday morning lineup. The show's principal characters were Superman, Batman & Robin, Aquaman and Wonder Woman, with the Jr. SF members, Wendy Harris and Marvin White with pet, Wonderdog. The first incarnation of The Superfriends played for 4 years. In 1977, the Wondertwins(Zan & Jayna), along with pet money, Gleek, picked up where Wendy, Marvin and Wonderdog left off, and they stayed for something like 8 years. Firestorm arrived in 1984, then Cyborg arrived, the following year. The show, itself, ran for 13 years, ranking it among scores of other long-running Saturday morning shows at the time that include Scooby-Doo(Batman & Robin appeared in SD episodes "The Dynamic Scooby-Doo Affair" and "The Caped Crusader Caper", both aired on CBS), The Bugs Bunny-Road Runner Show, The Archies, Fat Albert & the Cosby Kids, The Pink Panther, numerous Flintstones spin-offs, Tarzan Lord of the Jungle, etc. The 70's was littered and packed with long-running animated programs on Saturday mornings(not that there was anything wrong with them)- The Superfriends was time-tested and helped to spawn other similar animated superhero programs in first-run syndication in the 1980's(I don't need to go into detail about that). Nonetheless, of all of the long-running TV adventure cartoons, namely those that ran for longer than half a decade, The Superfriends stands out. Of course, we all have memories of our favorite episodes of this long-running TV series, so chime in. BTW, don't forget Oct. 8, The Superfriends: Legacy of Super Powers which covers the 1981-82 season, will be released on DVD and will finally complete SF being released on DVD, but you can always write to Warner Bros. to inquire about an eventual complete series box set. On that note, Happy 40th Anniversary to The Superfriends.
Like it or not, I never apologize for being a fan of whomever they may be.
